The mission of the Native Plant Program (NPP) is to champion California's botanical diversity and protect native plants from extinction in the wild. NPP coordinates statewide conservation activities for plants that are native to California and for plants designated as rare, threatened, or endangered pursuant to the California Endangered Species Act (CESA) or the Native Plant Protection Act (NPPA). California hosts approximately 6,500 species, subspecies and varieties of plants that occur naturally in the state, and many of these are found nowhere else in the world.
Part-time Scientific Aids help the program by:
Assisting with the preparation and issuance of Scientific, Educational and Management Permits for state-listed rare, threatened, and endangered plants and other permits issued by the Native Plant Program. Including maintaining databases and corresponding with permit applicants.
Helping with data entry, file organization, scanning documents, consolidation of botanical records and preparation of various recommendations and reports.

The position requires the use of a computer for several hours each day; the completion of office tasks that require sitting, standing, and walking to other locations; attendance at meetings both in-person and virtually. The position may require field work. A valid California's Driver's license is required in order to drive to project sites and may require travel of up to three or more hours each way including overnight travel, early mornings and late nights; hiking over uneven and possibly steep or wet terrain and use of an ATV; work in inclement weather. The position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff. This position allows for an in-office/telework hybrid work schedule and in-office attendance may change based on operational need. The headquarters office building is located in West Sacramento with free parking.

Special Requirements Education equivalent to completion of two years of college with a minimum of 10 semester hours in science; excellent writing and communicating skills; willingness to work irregular hours including weekends and holidays and to travel in performing field work; willingness to do routine work in order to learn; interest in and aptitude in the work; willingness to wear a uniform; ability to hike long distances through hazardous terrain. Aptitude and willingness to perform simple clerical work; follow a prescribed routine; personal neatness and the ability to follow directions. Must be dependable and have excellent attendance. Must have knowledge of or be currently studying plants and have an interest in a career in botany or general biology or ecology. Possession of a valid California driver's license. The selected candidate may be required to provide transcripts (may be unofficial).
