Assistant Veterinary Practice Manager

Position Purpose The Hospital Leader On Duty provides excellent veterinary care to our full‑service hospital patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners. The HLOD represents the mission and values of Petco to all pets and pet parents. The HLOD sets the tone with the technical and customer support partners in the hospital, and is responsible for fostering cohesion and motivation within the team. Essential Job Functions Greet clients and patients arriving for appointments, escort them into an exam room, obtain weight and vital signs, record in the electronic medical record, collect patient histories, and document the visit in EMRs. Assist doctors with routine and emergency appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision of veterinarian and Veterinary Technicians. Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications at direction of veterinarian, and help maintain the electronic medical record. Monitor and answer telephone lines, route calls, schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results to doctor and clients, and maintain client/patient records. Help prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, assist doctor and/or veterinary technician in anesthetizing patients, monitor patients under anesthesia, watch recovery, and prepare them for discharge or transfer to an overnight care facility. Under supervision, perform in‑hospital treatments for sick patients, including injectable, oral medications, IV fluid therapy; keep patients clean, watered, fed as directed; walk canine patients when necessary. Train new staff members and disseminate knowledge as required. Keep the hospital environment neat and clean, performing regular cleaning per schedule. Authoritatively perform tasks in the hospital such as inventory ordering and scheduling. Answer the practice phone and route calls appropriately. Schedule appointments from callers or visitors. Monitor wait times and adjust accommodations during peak or busy times or when medical staff is dealing with an emergency. Uphold and enforce all Petco and Vetco Total Care policies. Oversee operations of the hospital and supervise paraprofessional staff. Nature of Supervision Direct supervision from the Area Operations Manager will be provided for all activities related to patient and client care. Supervisory Responsibility Immediate daily supervisory duties over paraprofessional partners. Education & Experience Preferred: at least one year of experience in a veterinary practice or sufficient experience to perform required skills. Leadership capabilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Compassionate, sympathetic, and able to maintain a professional attitude during stressful situations. Telephone and computer skills. Team player who is willing to learn new techniques and accept change. Work Environment Majority of duties are conducted within the Veterinary Hospital. The position requires bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds when necessary, and standing for long periods. Time is spent in direct contact with clients and their pets. Contacts Regular communication will take place with clients, service teams, and management in Vetco Total Care Hospitals and Pet Care Centers.
