TECHNICIAN 2 - PRETEST

Pretest Unit Technician

The primary purpose of the Pretest Unit Tech is to assist with the processing of patients through the Pretest department by providing patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse and perform duties of venipuncture, EKG, stocking, chart building, patient registration, and other patient care duties as assigned.

Responsibilities include:

• Reporting to charge nurse to receive instructions for the shift
• Escorting patients from waiting room to POC
• Obtaining height, weight, and vital signs from patients upon their arrival to the department
• Drawing blood work, obtaining urine sample, completing EKG as ordered
• Ordering appropriate lab work in computer
• Assisting staff nurse with additional duties as needed or as delegated
• Maintaining current knowledge of computer systems
• Compiling necessary chart requirements and building patient charts when time allows
• Communicating tactfully with surgeon offices to request necessary paperwork
• Answering all phone calls and directing customers appropriately
• Other duties and tasks as assigned

Job requirements include:

• Maintain current, active BLS certification through the American Heart Association
• High school graduate, minimum 18 years old
• Medical tech and venipuncture experience preferred
• Understanding and adhering to all policies and regulations
• Ability to handle public tactfully
• Displays a positive attitude of interest and respect for people

Working conditions normally include eight hours a day, M-F. Shifts vary to provide coverage and meet the needs of the unit. Lunch periods and breaks are assigned and coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate departmental coverage. Subject to frequent interruptions and changes in priority of duties throughout the day. Sitting/standing/moving about during working hours.
