Essential Duties And Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Operational

• Monitor the receiving and unloading of merchandise to ensure that all department receiving accurately reflect the items and counts listed on vendor invoices, ensure accurate billing and pricing, and routinely check products to confirm quality, count and condition.
• Maintain proper ordering procedures according to company policy to ensure effective inventory control to maximize sales and turnover and to minimize over- and under-stocks.
• Open cartons and price items accurately and legibly; keep grocery manager informed of pricing problem areas or discrepancies; ensure that all items are in proper place and proper price label is under item; collaborate with the scan coordinator to make sure that all products are priced correctly.
• Handle damaged and spoiled products and assist in controlling the level of damaged goods.
• Assist customers in retrieving items from inaccessible areas or in obtaining products that are either located in warehouses or that they may have difficulty in handling.
• Control excessive use of utilities and water and observe sound conservation practices.
• Review invoice documents to confirm accuracy of item descriptions, sizes, quantities and pricing; ensure that they have been recorded on receiving log prior to submitting to office.
• Responsible for maintaining gross margins and prices on merchandise whenever new items are brought in or in response to vendor price changes in existing products; pricing responsibilities apply also to seasonal items, promotional items and ad merchandise.
• Keep refrigerated coolers, store shelves and other displays fully stocked and faced at all times according to tag allocation or department standards.
• Assist in building store displays for maximum sales and turnover, display merchandise in a neat and colorful manner.
• Maintain general housekeeping and sanitation standards in compliance with store policy and state and local health regulations on a regular, ongoing basis.
• Implement procedures to monitor floor conditions hourly during store hours; implement procedures to ensure refrigeration equipment will be checked for proper performance at least once every three hours during business hours.
• During store hours, respond promptly to emergencies and potential safety hazards such as spills/ broken glass or plastic containers that contain liquid products; never leave the scene until help arrives.
• Use and maintain equipment in good working order including all safeguards and safety devices or mechanisms; immediately advise store director of any maintenance or equipment problems.

Leadership

• Greet all customers and provide them with prompt and courteous service or assistance; handle customer complaints and provide the client with satisfaction whenever possible.
• Responsible for maintaining, safeguarding and forwarding all department-related accounting reports and documents to office according to company policies and procedures.
• Responsible for shelf price audit procedures to ensure that all merchandise is correctly priced as listed in the store's Pricing Guide including all ad and promotional merchandise.
• Perform sales forecasts weekly and calculate number of man hours by job class that is required to properly staff work shifts based on projected sales volume and/or workloads.
• Interface with vendor sales representatives and submit recommendations to the store director.
• Observe security standards by staying alert and being aware of customer actions and behavior, report to manager or security any abnormal behavior.
• Keep store team leader and key staff members informed of whereabouts at all times.
• Supervise and train all department personnel to perform assignments according to job requirements while maintaining effective employee relations.
• Conduct job performance appraisals and evaluations of department personnel on a regular basis but not less than once per year.
• Notify store manager of personnel situations or policy violations affecting store operating performance or of situations requiring disciplinary action or that may potentially require such action.
• Perform any other work-related duties as assigned.

Safety

• Must actively participate on Axonify.
• Must comply with company safety observation policies.

Requirements And Conditions

Education/Experience

• Minimum educational requirement is a high school education with a college background preferred, but not absolutely required or credentialed; or equivalent education.
• Should have at one year experience in the supermarket industry with a comprehensive working knowledge of all aspects of store operations; or equivalent experience.
• Must be able to be relocated to a store within 20 miles from home depending on the needs of the business.

Skills Required

• Be able to perform as well as supervise all duties of and meet the requirements and conditions for both an experiences grocery clerk and an experienced produce clerk.
• Ability to hear, speak and understand the spoken word in order to respond promptly to pages for assistance, to accommodate verbal requests from customers for information or assistance, to answer telephones, and to be able to communicate effectively with others.
• Must possess the math skills necessary to verify vendor invoice charges and counts, calculate gross margins and ad losses, make financial projections and forecasts, analyze inventory reports, estimate labor requirements based on volume/workloads, and be able to readily balance cash receipts or troubleshoot errors or discrepancies in cash or column balances.
• Be fully knowledgeable and thoroughly familiar with the nature and duties of every staff position in the department including procedures, policies and operations.

Physical Demands And Work Conditions

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and use the hands to handle, finger, or feel objects, tools or controls.
• The employee must occasionally exert or lift up to 55 pounds carrying packages of bulk dog food, cartons of milk or beverages, trash containers, etc. and frequently exert or lift moderate weights.
• Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and the ability to adjust focus including sufficient visual acuity to check invoices and other written documents.
• The employee must be able to climb a ladder to retrieve inaccessible items for customers located above freezer cases or from stockrooms and other storage areas; must be able to sweep and mop floors, dust and face shelves, and lift and carry out trash containers to be emptied in an outside bin.
• The employee must have sufficient physical agility to be able to respond quickly to fire or other emergencies such as cleanup requests (due to accidental spills or breakage of containers having liquid contents), shoplifting and other security assistance requests, customer accidents, etc.
• The employee must be able to stock coolers and shelves and endure working under temperature extremes (as low as 20F) in refrigerated storage areas up to 20 minutes at a time.
• In order to perform efficiently, the employee must have sufficient memory retention skills to memorize weekly ad prices.
