Aluminum Welder - Shipyard (USS Savannah Project) | Up to $35/hr + $120/Day Per Diem for Qualified Travelers

Location: Portland, OR

Pay: Up to $35/hour depending on weld test results

Per Diem: Candidates who live 75+ miles from Vancouver, WA qualify for $120/day per diem on days worked.

Key Responsibilities

• Read and interpret ship specifications, work orders, blueprints, and fabrication drawings.

• Fit, form, fabricate, and weld aluminum components on marine vessels.

• Perform MIG welding on aluminum materials in various positions.

• Use burning equipment and scarfing tips for beveling and material preparation.

• Conduct carbon arc gouging for weld preparation and cleanup.

• Perform SMAW and FCAW welding as required.

• Maintain quality standards and meet X-ray inspection requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Previous aluminum welding experience in a shipyard, fabrication, or industrial environment.

• Proficiency with MIG welding.

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.

• Ability to pass a weld test and X-ray inspection.

• Experience welding in multiple positions.

Weld Test Details

Candidates should be prepared to complete the following weld test:

• Three 3/8" aluminum groove weld coupons welded in the 2G, 3G, and 4G positions .

• Welding performed using MIG (GMAW) with 3/64" aluminum wire .

• Testing conducted on Miller and Lincoln welding machines .

• Additional 2G, 3G, and 4G fillet weld tests .

• Welds must pass visual inspection and X-ray testing .

Preferred Qualifications

• Pulse MIG welding experience.

• TIG welding experience.

• Flux-core welding experience.

• Previous shipyard or marine industry experience.

Schedule & Work Environment

• Primarily outdoor work on ships, with occasional shop work.

• Day Shift: Starts at 4:00 AM.

• Swing Shift: Starts at 2:00 PM.

• 10-12 hour shifts.

• 5-6 days per week.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
