Physician Assistant- Orthopedics

Job Summary The WPPA Physician Assistant is responsible for practicing medicine with physician supervision including conducting examinations and writing prescriptions. Within physician-physician assistant relationship, Physician Assistant exercises autonomy in medical decision making a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. May include responsibility for education, research, and administrative services. Essential Functions Understand and adhere to WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors. First Assist on surgical procedures; First and second assist on total hips and knees. Conduct physical exams, assess health status, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and treat illnesses including giving injections and suturing wounds. Consult with physicians as needed and refer to physicians for more complicated medical cases or cases that are not a routine part of a PA’s scope of work. Monitor therapies and provide continuity of care. Triage patient calls and evaluate patient problems. Respond to emergencies including use of CPR. Counsel patient/family on preventative health care. Document patient information and care in medical record, in confidential manner, and may maintain departmental statistical database for research purposes. Demonstrate knowledge of medical model and roles of physicians and physician assistants. Familiar with anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine and physical diagnosis. Demonstrate skill in gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic, and emotional patient data. Demonstrate skill in accurately evaluating patient problems in person or via phone and providing appropriate advice, intervention, or referral. Demonstrate ability to make responsible decisions within scope of PA practice. Demonstrate ability to collaborate effectively with physicians on complicated cases. Demonstrate ability to educate patients, families and staff in user‑friendly manner. Perform all other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Degree: Bachelor required; MS preferred. One year experience as Physician Assistant in appropriate clinical setting. Current White Plains Hospital Physician Assistant Collaborative Practice Agreement. Demonstrates ability to act in a professional capacity and serve as a professional role model. Demonstrates leadership skills including collaboration and negotiation. Demonstrates ability to communicate in a professional manner in all interactions; strong written and verbal communication skills. Establishes two‑way communication by utilizing variety of communication methods, actively listening to ideas and concerns and responding appropriately. Ability to concentrate on fine details with constant interruptions. Perform multiple duties in high volume area. Ability to deal professionally and efficiently with all levels of management and external constituencies. Self‑starter, self‑motivated and ability to work without supervision. Flexible, organized and able to set priorities. Demonstrates teamwork and adaptability. Maintains composure under stress. Ability to give clear, decisive instructions to nurses and technicians. Ability to maintain legible and thorough documentation of patient care. Ability for acute visual, auditory, tactile and olfactory senses. Ability to perform computer work for extensive periods of time. Required Certifications Physician Assistant – New York State Board of Medicine licensure. ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support – American Heart Association (required upon hire).
