BLS certification is required. Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:1; nurses circulate and scrubbing is a plus but not required. Charting is done using Cerner Surginet. There is a charge nurse on each shift who does not take patients or cases. Scrub techs are used in the unit. Weekend requirement is not mandatory. Holidays are covered by call. Scrub colors are provided by the facility. Call duty is 1 shift per week and every 4th weekend. Shifts have variable start times between 6 am and 9 am, with no evening or weekend shifts. Floating to other units is not required. Orientation includes one week of paperwork and one week partnered with a preceptor. Common patient diagnoses include orthopedic cases such as total hip and knee replacements. Additional cases include neuro and ortho spine, cardiovascular, general, gynecology, urology, and ENT. The unit typically handles 15-25 cases per day or about 400 cases per month. 20-25% of the cases are inpatient. CV or robotic cases are performed only if the tech has specific experience. There is a strong emphasis on following particular processes within the Operating Room suites. Anesthesia is administered by anesthesiologists only. Critical patients go directly to the ICU from the Operating Room.
