This role provides high-quality phlebotomy services in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. The Phlebotomist I performs blood draws and other specimen collections, ensures accurate labeling and processing, supports troubleshooting and training, and contributes to continuous workflow improvements while maintaining strict compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
• Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
• Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport and follow all procedures necessary to maintain proper temperature and specimen stability.
• Store specimens at required temperatures and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
• Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols to ensure proper handling and transport of specimens.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures in accordance with laboratory standards.
• Update patient information accurately in the system to support proper test processing and reporting.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory guidelines.
• Attend and complete annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
• Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries, as appropriate.
• Participate in troubleshooting activities and assist with training and workflow improvement recommendations as needed.

Essential Skills

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• Demonstrated experience with blood draws, venipuncture, and specimen collection.
• Ability to perform specimen labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging according to test requirements.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
• High school diploma or GED.
• 02 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role.
• Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate matching of requisitions, labels, and specimens.
• Ability to clearly explain procedures to patients in a courteous and professional manner.
• Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety practices.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in a non-float position within a laboratory or clinical environment.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting while maintaining accuracy and quality.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel.
• Comfort with answering telephone inquiries and reading laboratory results to callers when appropriate.
• Willingness to participate in ongoing training and adapt to updated procedures and protocols.
• Color vision sufficient to accurately read and interpret labels, specimens, and related materials.

Work Environment

This position is based in a clinical laboratory or hospital environment in Wilmington, Delaware. The role operates in a fast-paced setting that requires frequent patient interaction and consistent handling of biological specimens such as blood, urine, and fecal samples. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen transport containers, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office for documentation and communication. The work requires adherence to strict safety, cleanliness, and regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP guidelines. You will attend annual departmental training and follow established protocols to maintain specimen integrity and a safe working environment. Dress is typically professional clinical attire appropriate for a laboratory or hospital setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wilmington, DE.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.25 - $20.25/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
