Public Safety Officer Summary of Job Duties: The Public Safety Officer is responsible for enforcing traffic, criminal laws and parking regulations on campus. The role follows law enforcement standards and reports to the Chief of Campus Police. Responsibilities Patrol campus to detect and prevent crimes, enforce traffic laws and parking regulations, and identify safety hazards. Perform safety checks of buildings and secure facilities. Conduct investigations of crimes, accidents, and report incidents committed on campus. Direct traffic during periods of high density. Arrest violators, write incident reports, and testify in court as necessary. Receive and investigate incident reports and complaints from students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Cooperate with city, county, and state law enforcement officials in serving warrants, apprehending individuals, and obtaining investigative information. Monitor security and fire panels, assist with alarm systems and emergency power supplies. Respond to alarms, calls for assistance, check for locked/unlocked buildings and offices, and assist stranded motorists and others. Use tactics, as trained and equipped, to preserve the safety of citizens, oneself, and fellow officers. Communicate general and public safety information to students, staff, faculty, and the public. Detect, investigate, and report breaches of facilities, property damage, missing property, and hazardous conditions. Maintain uniforms and equipment; attend trainings. Assist in planning and implementing public service programs and training. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of general law enforcement methods and techniques, traffic and criminal laws, and parking regulations; ability to enforce laws, direct traffic, and maintain order. General computer knowledge. Skill in operation of firearms with safe use, accuracy, and annual certification. Strong communication skills: ability to write, speak clearly, prepare reports, edit work, and maintain attention to detail. Dependability: punctuality, following instructions, responding to management direction, and seeking feedback. Physical Demands Constant physical activity: balancing, climbing, crawling, driving, standing, talking, walking. Frequent physical activity: crouching, hearing, lifting, pulling. Occasional physical activity: sitting, stooping. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Certified law enforcement officer by the Arkansas Law Enforcement Standards Training Academy or equivalent, in accordance with ACA 12‑9‑106. Valid state motor vehicle operator’s license.
