• Wet lab experience and working knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques
• Experience with biologics, biochemistry, proteomics, or complex biological samples preferred

FULL DESCRIPTION: We are seeking a Research Associate to support analytical chemistry and biochemistry laboratory work for an 18-month temporary research project. This role is responsible for preparing complex environmental or biological samples, creating calibration standards and reagents, preparing samples for LC-MS and GC-MS analysis, organizing analytical data, supporting development and validation of testing procedures, and contributing to internal scientific discussions. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on wet lab experience, analytical chemistry knowledge, LC-MS and GC-MS sample preparation experience, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced research environment.

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

• Preparing organic compounds from complex environmental or biological samples
• Preparing complex samples for LC-MS and GC-MS analysis
• Supporting sample preparation for mass spectrometry workflows
• Creating calibration standards, test solutions, buffers, and reagents
• Supporting analytical chemistry work involving biologically manufactured materials and complex samples
• Assisting with reverse engineering and characterization of existing biological or chemical samples
• Designing, optimizing, and validating new analytical testing procedures
• Supporting extraction of novel biomolecules from complex or challenging samples
• Submitting LC-MS and GC-MS samples and organizing related data
• Maintaining accurate laboratory records, sample information, and experimental documentation
• Contributing to laboratory organization, cleanliness, and safe work practices
• Presenting results at internal scientific meetings
• Working closely with project team members, scientific leadership, and cross-functional collaborators
• Supporting day-to-day experiments related to developing and testing new technologies
• Running samples consistently and accurately to support project timelines
• Troubleshooting analytical chemistry and wet lab workflows as needed
• Performing other duties as assigned

The selected candidate will also possess:

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related field required
• Master's degree acceptable
• Several years of hands-on laboratory experience required
• Strong analytical chemistry experience required
• Experience in a wet lab environment required
• Working knowledge of a range of analytical chemistry techniques required
• LC-MS sample submission and data organization experience required
• GC-MS sample submission and data organization experience required
• Experience preparing samples for LC-MS and GC-MS analysis required
• Experience with biologics or biological manufacturing materials preferred
• Proteomics experience highly desired
• Experience characterizing proteins using MALDI-TOF preferred
• Familiarity with protein omics techniques preferred
• Biochemistry experience preferred
• Experience measuring enzyme kinetics preferred
• Protein purification experience preferred
• Experience with Thin Layer Chromatography preferred
• FTIR experience preferred
• Experience designing and carrying out experiments independently preferred
• Experience working with complex samples, including cell culture or biological samples, preferred
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
• Innovative, team-oriented, organized, and highly motivated work style required
• Ability to work onsite in San Diego, CA
• Ability to work Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day
• Ability to work core hours of 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
• Ability to support an 18-month temporary project

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand, sit, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout laboratory and office areas as needed
• Ability to work in a wet lab environment while preparing samples, reagents, buffers, standards, and test solutions
• Ability to use hands and fingers for pipetting, sample preparation, reagent preparation, labeling, documentation, data entry, and standard laboratory tasks
• Ability to work with analytical chemistry samples, biological samples, organic compounds, reagents, buffers, laboratory equipment, and related materials as needed
• Ability to review laboratory data, analytical results, sample information, experiment records, scientific documents, and computer screens for extended periods
• Ability to communicate by phone, email, video meeting, and in person throughout the workday
• Ability to maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and documentation accuracy
• Ability to follow all laboratory, safety, chemical handling, sample handling, and quality procedures
• Ability to wear required PPE and follow all applicable lab safety requirements
• Ability to maintain accuracy, focus, and attention to detail while supporting analytical chemistry and research workflows
