School District Investigator (Casual/Seasonal)

The School District Investigator (Casual/Seasonal) is responsible for conducting thorough, objective, and timely investigations related to staff conduct, workplace concerns, and potential violations of district policies, procedures, and applicable laws on an as-needed basis.

This position is designed to provide flexible investigative support during periods of increased need, complex cases, or to ensure timely completion of investigations. The Investigator applies professional investigative practices, ensures procedural fairness, and provides clear findings to support administrative decision-making. Candidates with prior law enforcement or investigative experience, including retired law enforcement professionals, are strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Investigations & Case Management
  • Conduct impartial investigations into allegations involving staff, including:
    • Misconduct
    • Policy violations
    • Workplace conflicts
    • Harassment, discrimination, or retaliation complaints
  • Develop investigation plans and timelines based on assignment scope
  • Conduct interviews with complainants, respondents, and witnesses
  • Collect, review, and analyze evidence (documents, communications, video, etc.)
  • Maintain accurate and confidential investigative records
Reporting & Documentation
  • Prepare clear, concise investigative reports that include:
    • Allegations
    • Evidence reviewed
    • Findings of fact
    • Conclusions using a preponderance of evidence standard
  • Submit reports within established timelines or as directed
  • Provide verbal briefings to Human Resources and district leadership as needed
Compliance & Confidentiality
  • Ensure all investigations align with:
    • District policies and procedures
    • State and federal employment laws
    • Applicable regulations (e.g., Title IX, when assigned)
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to professional ethical standards
Collaboration
  • Work collaboratively with Human Resources and administrators
  • Follow district-established investigative protocols and procedures
  • Participate in orientation or training updates as required for casual staff
Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Human Resources, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum of 5 years of investigative experience
  • Demonstrated experience conducting interviews and preparing investigative reports
  • Strong knowledge of investigative practices and evidence analysis
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
Preferred
  • Retired or former law enforcement officer, detective, or investigator
  • Experience with workplace or administrative investigations
  • Familiarity with K-12 school systems or public sector environments
  • Training or certification in workplace investigations or Title IX
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to remain neutral and objective in sensitive situations
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage case timelines
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and integrity
Work Conditions & Schedule
  • Casual/Seasonal Role: Work is assigned on an as-needed basis; no guaranteed hours
  • Schedule may vary week-to-week depending on investigative needs
  • May include daytime, evening, or occasional urgent assignments
  • Travel between school sites may be required
Compensation
  • Hourly or per diem rate (to be determined by the district based on experience)
  • Not eligible for full-time benefits unless otherwise required by law or district policy

This position is intended to supplement the district's investigative capacity and ensure timely, fair, and thorough handling of staff-related concerns. Individuals in this role must be able to quickly integrate into cases, maintain neutrality, and uphold the district's standards for professionalism and compliance.
