The Fire Lieutenant/Paramedic serves as a frontline company officer responsible for the leadership, supervision, training, and operational readiness of assigned personnel within the Sanger Fire Department. This position provides company-level supervision during emergency and non-emergency operations, ensuring the effective delivery of fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services, and community risk reduction activities. The Fire Lieutenant/Paramedic serves as a role model and leader who promotes the department’s mission, values, professionalism, accountability, and commitment to providing exceptional service to Sanger's citizens. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities Essential duties and functions may include, but are not limited to, the following. Company Officer Responsibilities Serves as an emergency response team leader responsible for the supervision and direction of assigned Firefighter/EMT, Firefighter/Paramedic, and Driver/Engineer personnel. Provides leadership, guidance, and accountability to assigned personnel during emergency and non-emergency operations. Assumes command responsibilities at emergency incidents until relieved by a higher-ranking officer. Performs incident size-up, establishes operational priorities, assigns resources, and ensures firefighter and public safety through effective incident management practices. Maintains personnel accountability and ensures compliance with department policies, procedures, and operational guidelines. Conducts post-incident reviews and provides feedback to improve operational effectiveness. Emergency Response Operations Responds to emergency alarms involving structure fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescues, medical emergencies, severe weather events, and other emergency situations. Performs fire suppression activities including hose deployment, ladder operations, fire attack, ventilation, search and rescue, salvage, and overhaul operations. Operates within hazardous environments while wearing full protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus. Provides rescue services including technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and life safety operations. Ensures assigned apparatus, equipment, and facilities are maintained in a state of operational readiness. Emergency Medical Services Provides advanced life support emergency medical care as a Texas Department of State Health Services certified Paramedic, licensed Paramedic, or National Registry Paramedic. Responds to medical emergencies and provides patient assessment, treatment, stabilization, and transportation according to Sanger Fire Department EMS protocols and department policies. Documents patient care and maintains accurate medical records in accordance with applicable regulations. Participates in EMS quality improvement activities and continuing education. Training and Professional Development Provides company-level training, instruction, and mentoring to improve firefighter skills and operational readiness. Develops future leaders through coaching, professional development, and positive reinforcement. Identifies training needs and communicates deficiencies or recommendations to command staff. Maintains personal proficiency through continuing education, skills development, and participation in department training programs. Administrative Responsibilities Completes required reports, inspections, documentation, and administrative assignments. Assists with department programs including apparatus inspections, equipment maintenance, station responsibilities, EMS initiatives, fire prevention activities, and special projects. Participates in committees, policy development, and organizational improvement efforts as assigned. May assume responsibilities of Assistant Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, or other command staff positions when assigned and properly qualified. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The successful candidate must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Knowledge of modern fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services, and emergency management practices. Ability to effectively supervise personnel during emergency and non-emergency operations. Ability to make sound decisions under stressful and rapidly changing conditions. Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with employees, supervisors, elected officials, citizens, businesses, and community organizations. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing. Ability to prepare reports, documentation, and correspondence. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to understand and apply conflict management, problem-solving, and leadership principles. Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information. Ability to maintain physical fitness and perform strenuous emergency response activities. Knowledge of applicable fire service standards, regulations, and best practices. Commitment to continuous improvement, professional development, and organizational excellence. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Minimum of four (4) years of experience in fire suppression and emergency medical services, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Current Texas Department of State Health Services EMT-Paramedic certification, licensed Paramedic certification, or National Registry Paramedic certification. Texas Commission on Fire Protection Structural Firefighter certification. Valid Texas Driver’s License. Required certifications: Driver Operator One additional TCFP certification approved by the Fire Chief, such as: Aerial Apparatus Operator Fire Investigator Fire Inspector Safety Officer Required Licenses and Certifications The employee must maintain: Current Paramedic certification through DSHS, licensed Paramedic credential, or NREMT Paramedic certification. Current Texas Commission on Fire Protection Structural Firefighter certification. All certifications required by the City of Sanger and the Fire Chief. Fire Officer II certification within an established timeline as determined by the Fire Chief. Additional certifications identified as necessary for department operations. Employees promoted from outside the organization must currently hold the rank of Lieutenant or above with their current department. The Fire Lieutenant/Paramedic is expected to demonstrate leadership consistent with the Sanger Fire Department values: The Lieutenant shall: Lead by example through professionalism, accountability, and ethical behavior. Continuing Education and Professional Development The Fire Lieutenant/Paramedic shall complete an additional twenty (20) professional development hours annually above minimum state requirements in areas approved by the Fire Chief, including: Leadership Supervision Customer Service Building Construction Strategy and Tactics Emergency Medical Services Emergency Management Work Environment and Physical Requirements The employee must be able to: Work a variety of schedules including 48/96, 24/48, or other approved fire service schedules. Work overtime, emergency callbacks, special assignments, and emergency deployments as required. Respond to emergency incidents within established department expectations. Perform physically demanding activities including lifting, carrying, climbing, crawling, operating equipment, and working in hazardous environments. Operate in extreme weather conditions and stressful emergency situations. Meet physical requirements necessary for fire suppression and emergency medical operations. Visual requirements include the ability to recognize traffic signs, locate addresses from approximately 50 feet, operate in low-light conditions, and distinguish between red, yellow, and green signals. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual in English and Spanish. Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or related field.
