Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider's orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting with examinations and treatments of patients. Nursing and supervisory techniques are applied in the care, treatment, and referrals of individuals. Technical and clinical procedures are performed within the scope of education and licensure. Appropriate nursing skills are applied in the area and treatment of individuals. During sick calls with the physician, the RN prepares a list of individuals to be examined and prepares the examining room and equipment. Medication is dispensed and documented as required by applicable policies and procedures. The RN communicates with Licensed Independent Providers regarding medication and treatment orders, as well as emergencies. Examinations and assessments are conducted for new individuals with illnesses or injuries. Referrals may be made to emergency rooms or other appropriate healthcare facilities as required by conditions. Emergency procedures are performed as needed, with notification to Licensed Independent Providers for treatment orders. Coordination of professional medical services provided by contract personnel is part of the role. Monitoring of inpatient hospitalizations for early releases is done as directed. The RN provides guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. Building a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies is essential. Established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures are utilized in decision-making. Regular evaluation of the provision of medical services is performed to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of services. Absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records must be maintained. Assistance is provided to Health Service Administrators with the review of medical files for documentation accuracy. Potential catastrophic illnesses are closely monitored. The RN audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed or required. Compliance with applicable pharmacy laws, especially regarding controlled substances, is mandatory. Behavior of individuals is observed and recorded. The medical unit is inspected for items that could be used as contraband; items are securely stored or disposed of safely. Health counseling and education are provided on an individual or group basis as required. Assistance is given to Health Service Administrators in preparing and maintaining a variety of records, reports, and logs. Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, and legal documents is required. Processing and responding to lawsuits occurs via corporate counsel, and attendance at court hearings may be necessary. Where applicable, facilitation of accreditation of the medical program is essential. Safety and accident reports are prepared and disseminated as required by policies and procedures. Appropriate action is taken in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
