Campus Engagement Manager - Michigan State University
Collegiate Mobile
Job Description
Campus Engagement Manager\n
Spartans Mobile | A Michigan State University Partner | East Lansing, MI (on-site, regularly on the MSU campus) | Full-time
\n The short version\nYou'll be the person on the ground responsible for Spartans Mobile's market at Michigan State University. The job has three parts:
\nSales & Campus Activation: Run our campus sales operation, from our campus presence to game day, and lead the student team behind it.
\nMSU Stakeholder Management: Be Spartans Mobile's day-to-day point of contact with the university, and keep both sides aligned.
\nBusiness Development & Community Partnerships: Build partnerships across the wider MSU community, from local businesses to student groups and alumni.
\nAll three serve one goal: growing Spartans Mobile's subscriber base at MSU.
\nThis is an on-site job. You'll spend a significant part of every week on and around campus: at our campus presence, at events, with your interns, in meetings with MSU staff, and in local businesses.
\nThis isn't a marketing coordinator or campus ambassador role. You'll work closely with Collegiate Mobile's leadership team, with real ownership of what happens at MSU.
\n About Spartans Mobile\nSpartans Mobile is wireless service built specifically for the Michigan State University community. We offer affordable plans on a nationwide 5G network, plus MSU-specific perks and partnerships for students, staff, faculty, alumni, and supporters. A portion of every subscriber's bill goes back to MSU.
\nThe goal is for Spartans Mobile to be more than a phone plan: a real part of the MSU community.
\nSpartans Mobile is part of Collegiate Mobile, a small, entrepreneurial team building a new model for university-connected wireless. That means real room to experiment, take ownership, and have a direct impact.
\n Core responsibilities1. Sales & Campus Activation\nYou're responsible for turning Spartans Mobile's campus presence into leads, sales, and subscribers—not just impressions.
\n- \n
- Run the day-to-day campus sales operation, including our on-campus presence: coverage, materials, customer experience, and results. \n
- Plan and run booths, tabling, and sales events at high-traffic moments: move-in, Welcome Week, Sparticipation, home football and basketball games, student organization events, resource fairs, graduation, and other major campus moments. \n
- Coordinate logistics, staffing, equipment, messaging, and follow-up for campus activations. \n
- Recruit, train, schedule, and coach a cohort of student interns and ambassadors. Set weekly priorities and goals, hold team meetings and one-on-ones, address performance issues, and develop your best people into student leaders. \n
- Sell alongside your team: talk with prospective customers, help people switch their existing numbers to Spartans Mobile, follow up on leads, and test offers and messaging. \n
- Work with our marketing team on campus social media, and direct the content your interns create at events and around campus. \n
- Track leads and conversions by event and channel, find where prospects drop off, and fix it. \n
Spartans Mobile only works if the university relationship works. You'll keep it strong day to day.
\n- \n
- Serve as Spartans Mobile's primary day-to-day point of contact for key MSU stakeholders. \n
- Run a biweekly meeting with those stakeholders to share updates, coordinate upcoming activities, work through issues, and identify new opportunities. \n
- Handle the coordination in between: events, marketing assets, approvals, promotions, partnerships, and scheduling, by email and other channels. \n
- Keep MSU and Collegiate Mobile aligned: bring MSU's priorities and requests back to our leadership team, make sure both sides know what was agreed and who owns it, and follow through on every commitment. \n
- Build trust and credibility with administrators, departments, Spartan athletics, student organizations, and other key partners across the university. \n
Make Spartans Mobile a bigger part of the MSU community, and find new ways to reach customers through it.
\n- \n
- Recruit MSU-founded, MSU-connected, and local businesses into Spartans Mobile's Local Partnership Program. \n
- Run partnerships from start to finish: \n
- Research and prospect \n
- Reach out in person, by email or phone, on LinkedIn or Instagram, or through warm introductions \n
- Learn what the business needs and agree on a member benefit that works for them \n
- Launch it and keep the relationship going \n
- Reach out across the wider MSU community to create new sales events, activations, and partnerships. That includes student organizations, Greek chapters, residence halls, international and graduate student groups, alumni groups, student-athletes, and entrepreneurs. \n
- Bring back what you learn: which perks students actually care about, and ideas for new ones. \n
- Track which partnerships members use and which bring in new customers, and put your time where the results are. \n
- You'll be expected to find opportunities rather than wait for them. An existing MSU network helps, but you should be comfortable building relationships from scratch. \n
These serve the three pillars rather than standing on their own:
\n- \n
- Report results and issues to Collegiate Mobile's leadership team, and recommend where to spend more or less time and money. \n
- Test new ideas and measure their impact. \n
- Help our marketing team with partnership announcements, and keep them posted on what students are talking about. \n
- Provide feedback from the MSU community that can help shape future Spartans Mobile products, benefits, and campaigns. \n
- \n
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance; life insurance; short- and long-term disability; and a 401(k) with company match \n
- Meaningful ownership of a growing business at one of the country's largest universities \n
- Direct management experience leading a team of student interns \n
- Hands-on sales, business development, and partnership experience in telecom and technology \n
- A direct line to Collegiate Mobile's leadership team, and the autonomy to turn your ideas into real initiatives \n
- Relationships with MSU organizations, businesses, athletes, and campus leaders, plus access to major MSU events as part of the job \n
- The opportunity for more responsibility as Collegiate Mobile expands to additional campuses \n
- \n
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience \n
- 1–3 years of experience in sales, business development, partnerships, or another customer-facing role \n
- Comfort with sales: starting conversations with people you don't know, asking for the sale, and following up \n
- A professional, dependable communicator who can earn credibility with university administrators and business owners as well as students \n
- Ability to lead, motivate, and hold a team accountable to goals \n
- Strong organization: you can juggle events, schedules, and partner follow-ups without dropping commitments \n
- Comfortable working independently in a small, entrepreneurial company \n
- Able to work on-site in East Lansing, spend a significant part of each week on the MSU campus, and work some evenings and weekends around major campus events \n
- Strong interest in building relationships and developing partnerships \n
- \n
- A Michigan State University degree. Much of this job, especially partner outreach, starts from a genuine MSU connection. \n
- Existing relationships with MSU student organizations, departments, athletics, Greek life, or other campus communities \n
- Experience managing interns, ambassadors, or student employees \n
- Experience negotiating or managing partnerships \n
- Event or experiential marketing experience \n
- Startup or small-company experience \n
- Experience with CRM, project-management, or analytics tools \n
- Familiarity with the MSU student experience \n
You're the kind of person who walks into a room full of strangers and thinks, "Who should I talk to?"
\nYou're comfortable making the first call, sending the cold email, approaching the student organization president, walking into the local business, and recruiting the intern.
\nYou know trust gets built through follow-through: doing what you said you'd do, when you said you'd do it. And you enjoy figuring out why someone says yes, and why someone says no.
\nYou don't need to know everything about wireless. You do need to be curious, resourceful, and willing to figure things out.
\nYou'll have support and materials to start from, but no finished playbook. Part of the job is helping us build it.
\n How we'll measure success\nThe number that matters most is new Spartans Mobile subscribers from MSU.
\nBeyond that, we'll look at:
\nSales & Campus Activation: lead-to-subscriber conversion, results from campus sales locations and events, and intern productivity and retention
\nMSU Stakeholder Management: commitments delivered, issues resolved, and new opportunities coming out of the university relationship
\nBusiness Development & Partnerships: local partners live and in use, and new events, activations, and community channels that bring in subscribers
\nThe exact metrics will evolve as the business grows.
\n How to apply\nApply with your resume and a short note on why you'd be successful growing Spartans Mobile at Michigan State.
\nWe'd especially like to hear about:
\n- \n
- A relationship with an organization, business, or institution that you built and kept strong \n
- A time you took ownership of something without a clear playbook \n
- How you'd turn Spartans Mobile's campus presence into more subscribers \n
Spartans Mobile and Collegiate Mobile are equal opportunity employers. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
