The organization seeks individuals with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Registered/Licensed/Certified Veterinary Technician (RVT/LVT/CVT) license, or a B.S. in Animal Science or related field to represent the program as a Certified Animal Safety Representative (CASR) on motion picture, television, commercial and new media locations. Job Summary Represent American Humane Hollywood’s No Animals Were Harmed program on film and media locations to ensure humane treatment of animal performers, document housing and care, and guide safety practices. Advise on animal safety issues and uphold AH’s Guidelines for the Safe Use of Animals in Filmed Media. Regular interaction with animal trainers, production staff, and occasionally the media. Responsibilities and Duties Monitor animal action in filmed media and educate film personnel on humane matters. Ensure safety and welfare of animals involved. Prepare timely, detailed reports describing animal action, safety precautions, and welfare considerations; reports support certification decisions and program reviews. Communicate effectively with production staff and agencies; act as liaison when needed with local authorities. Be available for local and national travel; international travel may be requested and passport may be required. Assignments vary in length and time, with production days often long; equipment must be suitable for varied weather. Research species as needed to perform effectively on assignments; contact Hollywood program scheduling for specifics when required. Follow the pre-production process for housing, transport, confidentiality, and reporting; ensure on-time submission of all reports per policy. Maintain safety and humane standards on set and provide guidance regarding animal care and filming specifics. Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities Must have one or more qualifications: DVM; RVT/LVT/CVT; or B.S. in Animal Science or related field from an accredited school, or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Diversity of experience in animal health and behavior preferred. Commitment to animal welfare; equine knowledge preferred. Broad knowledge of animals from horses to snakes and spiders, fish, dogs, birds, goats, and cats. Excellent verbal and written communication; active listening; diplomacy in collaboration. Knowledge of special effects and stunts involving animals preferred. Ability to work effectively with little supervision; detail-oriented and organized; sound judgment. Ability to analyze situations and make recommendations quickly; proficient with computers for email and report writing. Successful completion of the American Humane Society Certified Animal Safety Representative Training Course is required. Physical Demands and Work Environment To become a CASR, selected applicants must complete and pass the CASR training during a probationary period of about 5 weeks (1 week classroom, 4 weeks on-set). The work environment is primarily motion picture production sets and locations; ability to work outdoors in varied weather and terrain is required. Outdoors in extreme conditions; walking, climbing, standing; occasional lifting 10 kg or more; reaching, handling, bending; good vision. Valid driver’s license and ability to provide own transportation to production locations; travel internationally as needed on short notice. Production days may be 10–12 hours; on-call schedule and shift timing may vary. Materials and Equipment Used Uniform, computer, identification, binoculars, cell phone, flashlight, batteries, weather gear, change of clothes.
