Supervisory Physician (Chief Medical Officer/Flight Surgeon) (Direct Hire)

Summary Serves as the Chief Medical Officer and Flight Surgeon at Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC). Provides aerospace medical support to NASA pilots and aircrew, and manages the Center’s Occupational Health Program. Reports directly to the Director for Mission Support. Duties Chief Medical Officer and designated Flight Surgeon, FAA Senior Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), performing flight physicals on NASA research and test pilots. Medical Director for the AFRC local Emergency Medical System, ensuring appropriate ambulance response and the Automated External Defibrillator Program. Manages Occupational Medicine, Medical Emergency Response, Fitness Center, Industrial Hygiene, Food Sanitation, Health Physics (radiation safety), and Employee Assistance. Implements occupational health services at the Center in accordance with NASA Occupational Health Program requirements. Operates and manages Reduced Oxygen Breathing Device used to train aircrew on hypoxia effects. Local aeromedical waiver authority and local Health and Medical Technical Authority on behalf of the Agency’s Chief Health and Medical Officer. Manages operational and administrative functions, recommends and improves Branch processes, develops personnel, assigns work, and defines technical work requirements and milestones. Contracting Officer’s Representative, managing the contract for Occupational Health Services (Medical, Industrial Hygiene, Health Physics, Fitness Center). Member of the monthly NASA Chief Medical Officers Board (CMB), contributing to discussions on aerospace medical and health policy. Full range of supervisory duties: assign and evaluate work, recommend personnel actions, take disciplinary actions, identify training needs, develop employees. Requirements U.S. citizenship, nationality, or allegiance to the U.S. Probationary period may be required; details governed by Title 5, Part 11. Must meet qualifications by the closing date of the announcement. Pre‑employment background investigation may be required; clearance level depends on duty location. Financial disclosure, drug testing, or travel requirements may vary by duty location. Must obtain or maintain a current license and/or certification: Active/Unrestricted CA Medical License within 6 months. Qualifications Must meet all three requirements listed unless covered by an exception: Mandatory Basic Requirement shown in Education section. Specialized experience or related education equipping competencies needed for duties. Certification/Training requirements. GS‑15 Level Requirements Five years of graduate training in the medical specialty; or Combination of experience and training equivalent to at least five years of graduate training in the required specialty. Preferred Experience Five or more years as a Flight Surgeon and/or FAA Senior Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). Five or more years performing flight physicals on aircrew and test pilots. Graduate Training and Certification Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, followed by at least one year supervised clinical experience (internship, residency, fellowship). Programs must be accredited by recognized U.S. or Canadian bodies. Board‑certification or eligibility in Aerospace Medicine, Occupational and/or Preventive Medicine. Successfully completed Class 3 Flight Physical. Current, active, full, unrestricted state license or registration as a Physician.
