Research Nurse Manager

SUMMARY
The Manager - Research Nurse Oncology reports to the Director, Brown University Health Oncology Clinical Research (LOCR). The role coordinates research activities across all Brown University Health Cancer Institute sites, overseeing clinical activities related to research, including Nurse Practitioner, research nurses, and research nurse coordinators. The manager identifies, recruits, and follows up with patients in clinical research studies, collaborates with physicians and other healthcare team members, promotes and assists in study implementation, collects data, monitors programs, and ensures adherence to protocols. The role may coordinate data collection for clinical trials with external institutions, participate in data analysis, and prepare manuscripts for publication.RESPONSIBILITIES
Uses benchmark and best practice data to identify core components of professional nursing practice in the oncology research arena. Implements a best practice model in the department and ensures nursing practice meets the standard. Develops policies and procedures that validate best practice, reviews policies annually for benchmark data, and monitors research activities to ensure compliance. Participates in the identification of quality metrics for the department with focus on the integrity of the nursing process in clinical research. Interviews, selects, evaluates, and provides guidance to research nursing staff, other professional staff, and clerical support personnel. Directs work of subordinates to gather data and prepare and maintain records for research investigatory studies, assisting physicians in identifying patients that meet inclusion criteria. Assures all requirements for protocol eligibility are met. Contacts appropriate attending physicians to explain study and gain cooperation. Obtains patients' informed consent following established guidelines; may write study‑specific forms for approval by the Patient Protection Committee. Establishes study record for each participant and abstract information from medical records. Monitors adherence to protocol through review of patient records, data collection sheets, and regular contact with patients and team members. Creates monitoring schemas for specific study protocols to depict concise criteria for use in the monitoring process. Alerts physicians when laboratory studies, follow‑up data, etc., are due. Abstracts information from data collection sheets to determine response to treatment and identify abnormalities or problems associated with treatment protocols. Alerts appropriate healthcare and/or research team members as necessary. May recommend revisions to protocols and report ongoing studies to the research physician. Maintains liaison with pharmaceutical companies, clinical centers, and other participants to gather and exchange information. May serve as central resource to coordinate research data collection from multiple outside institutions participating in related investigatory studies. Ensures timely and accurate receipt and processing of information for analysis by investigators. May research literature to assess related findings and assist in writing papers for publication. May perform duties of Research Nurse as required, with direct patient contact to administer drugs, obtain specimens, perform EKGs, or related assessment or care functions. Maintains and enhances professional expertise through participation in appropriate educational activities. Sets strategic vision for area according to standards of excellence as foundation for practice. Designs strategies to support organizational goals. Sets unit‑based goals and objectives consistent with overall departmental and institutional perspective. Monitors progress toward goal attainment and schedules regular nursing meetings for all levels of personnel, providing updates on the progress, direction, and operational information. Develops employees to their fullest potential by identifying educational opportunities and unit‑based growth experiences. Monitors compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies and intervenes when appropriate to improve nursing care. Performs other duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island or under the Nurse Licensure Compact. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, including coursework in chemistry, biology, and pharmacology. Master's Degree in Nursing or related healthcare field preferred. Current licensure to practice as an RN in Rhode Island. Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, physicians, research investigators, and other professionals. Supervisory skills to direct and evaluate subordinates. Analytical ability to classify and evaluate data, assess abnormalities or problems with protocols, and monitor a budget. Organizational ability to develop and maintain records, monitor adherence to protocols, and coordinate data collection from multiple outside sources. Professional knowledge in nursing to assess a wide variety of patients for inclusion in oncology research studies and to assess response to treatment. Knowledge of patient care considerations related to aging, human development stages, and cultural patterns.EXPERIENCE
At least 5-7 years of progressively more responsible experience in hematology and oncology clinical nursing, including research experience. Prior leadership experience preferred.WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Supervisory responsibility for up to twenty‑five FTEs including research nurses, research nurse coordinators, and Nurse Practitioners.
