Transportation Maintainer 3 (Skilled Tree Climber)

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) invites experienced agency employees to apply for the position of Transportation Maintainer 3 (Sweeper Operator) in District4 at the Danbury Maintenance Garage. Position Highlights Monday – Friday Full‑time, 40 hours per week First shift, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM Location: Danbury Maintenance Garage (on‑site) The Role Provide tree and roadside maintenance to ensure safety and clear travel zones within District4. Responsibilities include removing hazardous trees, trimming limbs and brush to improve visibility, assessing tree hazards, and operating equipment such as chainsaws, bucket trucks, climbing gear. The role also supports snow and ice removal, storm cleanup, pothole patching, guardrail repairs, and may respond to traffic incidents. Valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC). Willingness to accept emergency duties, including winter overtime from November1 to April30 and on‑call storm operations that may last several days. Residency within 30miles of the posting location. Certified in aerial bucket truck operation and fall protection (safety harness and trauma strap). Completion of interview before skill‑evaluation practicum. Bring completed Employment of Relatives Form, Acknowledgement of Ethics Receipt, valid CDL, and MEC for interview. Trucks and Equipment Utilized Elevation platform Ten‑wheel barrel line marking machine Concrete saws, core drills, 12‑22 foot flail mower, four‑wheel drive airport snow fighter, front‑end loaders, hand‑operated pavement marking machine, mechanical catch basin cleaner, power‑driven rollers, power pickup sweepers, shotcrete/gunite machines, tilt‑bed trailers, post pounder (driver only), vactor (driver only), track‑mounted skid steer with attachments (standard bucket, grapple bucket, mower, snow blower, sweeper, dozer blade). Key Duties Drainage pipe setting Driver of wing truck with plows during snow and ice operations Skilled tasks in construction, maintenance, mechanical repair, electrical, carpentry, masonry, welding, automotive and heavy equipment repair, plumbing, painting Test boring, skilled tree climbing, VIP project inspection District office radio operator (backup) Service patrol, sign erector (general), pothole patcher operator Materials management stockroom supervision (optional) Assist Transportation Maintenance Manager with reports Wildlife hazard control, radio monitoring, communication, escort vendors and contractors in secure airport areas (state‑owned) Stand‑by for fire and crash emergencies at state‑owned airports (if required) Perform related duties as required Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Extensive knowledge of roadside, roadway, bridge, and airport construction, maintenance, and repair techniques. Understanding of processes and materials used in construction and maintenance trades. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to operate and perform ordinary repairs on complex mechanical equipment. Maintaining shop records, preparing reports, using and maintaining bench and other shop tools. Follow written and oral instructions; utilize computer software. Minimum Qualifications – General Experience Two (2) years of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance, and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports, involving operation and care of mechanical equipment or work in recognized maintenance trades. Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma completing the subject requirements in one of the maintenance trades can substitute for the general experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience performing tree‑related maintenance. Experience climbing trees using ropes, harnesses, and other climbing equipment. Experience identifying tree species and assessing tree hazards. Special Requirements Possession and retention of appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications. Willingness to accept emergency duties, including snow and ice removal whenever required. Character Requirements At state airports, a thorough background investigation may be conducted before certification for appointment. Physical Requirements Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity, and maintenance of physical fitness to perform duties. A physical examination is required. Working Conditions Exposure to extreme weather, heavy weight lifting, dangerous road conditions, heights on bridges, poison ivy, insect bites, allergy irritants, loud machinery. May require completion of an asbestos removal program per EPA guidelines and use of protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
