Job Title Forest Fire Equipment Operator (S) – Position Number 60031783 – Grade NC07 Duty Station 4578 NC HWY 242 N, Elizabethtown, NC 28337 Overview The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) is an emergency response division that provides forest protection, resource management, and environmental education to residents and landowners throughout North Carolina. Responsibilities Maintain and operate bulldozer, hauling unit, and other heavy equipment used in wildland fire suppression, pre-suppression, prescribed burning, and forestation. Perform minor equipment repairs and assist the district mechanic with major repairs. Assist with information and education programs, forest management activities, or other assigned tasks. Respond to emergencies such as wildland fires and natural disasters; participate on incident management teams as assigned. Work primarily 8:00-5:00 M-F, with extended readiness for evenings, holidays, and weekends; available after hours during fire danger periods. Travel overnight as required. Requirements & Qualifications High school diploma or GED and at least two years of heavy equipment operation experience. Completion of NC FFEO training schedule within two years of hire. Current North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License at hire date, or learner’s permit with license obtained within 90 days. Pass pre‑employment drug testing and possess a Medical Examiner’s Certification (Medical Card). Ability to maintain heavy equipment such as bulldozer, motor grader, or excavator. Ability to operate a truck tractor with low boy trailer across varied road conditions. Skilled in performing minor equipment repairs. Self-starter, service-oriented, and able to work independently or as a team player. Additional Information Official NCFS uniforms are provided by the employer. A 13-speed hauling unit driving evaluation and a crawler proficiency evaluation are required on the day of the interview.
