Senior Utility Mechanic (Drinking Water Operations)

Service Line/Section: Houston Water/Drinking Water Operations Reporting Location: Various Locations* Houston, Tx. Workdays & Hours: Monday-Friday; 7:00 am - 4:00 pm* Description Of Duties / Essential Functions Performs skilled mechanical maintenance and repair duties for water systems and facilities. Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, installations, lubrications, and repairs on rotating equipment, piping, pumps, motors, blowers, compressors, valves, lines, water systems, facilities, and equipment. Maintains and repairs equipment, and tools used to perform responsibilities. Collects and catalogs data on installed equipment. Makes service calls to maintain and repair equipment and install equipment identification tags. Reports unsafe conditions and equipment to proper authorities, keeping records of service calls, maintenance and repair work. May be required to drive a City vehicle and maintain vehicle maintenance and mileage records. Working Conditions This position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 80 pounds), assuming awkward positions for long periods of time, and other hazardous conditions. This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management Position at the Tier I Level. Minimum Requirements Educational Requirements: Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and mathematical functions up to nine months education or training beyond the high school level; vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment. Experience Requirements: Three (3) years of building or mechanical maintenance OR one (1) year as an operator trainee and two years in building or mechanical maintenance. One year directly related college or vocational education may be substituted for up to one year of work experience. License Requirements: Valid Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2). Preferences Training and experience in corrective and preventive maintenance programs related to equipment such as centrifugal pump maintenance, motors, air compressors, piping, blowers, valves and hydraulic equipment. Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. Safety Impact Position Yes. This position is subject to random drug testing and, if a promotional position, the candidate must pass an assignment drug test. Salary Information Pay Grade 16. Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications and the pay rates of other employees in this classification. Selection / Skills Tests Required None, though the department may administer a skill assessment evaluation.
