Associate Director, Global Export and Trade Compliance

Overview The Associate Director, Global Export and Trade Compliance (Associate Director) plays a vital role in ensuring the University’s compliance with U.S. export control laws and trade regulations, including ITAR, EAR, and OFAC regulations. This position reports to the Executive Director, Global Export and Trade Compliance and supports the development, implementation, and day-to-day management of NYU’s Global Export and Trade Compliance Program, a core element of the University’s Global Ethics and Compliance Program. The Associate Director works under the direction of the GETC Executive Director; they are expected to operate independently, manage a significant portfolio of responsibilities, and engage with stakeholders across NYU’s campuses—including NY, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai. The role is suited to a highly skilled compliance professional with demonstrated subject-matter knowledge, strong problem-solving abilities, and the ability to advise stakeholders across disciplines. Responsibilities Support the development, implementation, and day-to-day management of NYU’s Global Export and Trade Compliance Program. Operate under the direction of the GETC Executive Director; manage a significant portfolio of responsibilities; engage with stakeholders across NYU campuses—including NY, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai. Advise stakeholders across disciplines with strong subject-matter knowledge and problem-solving abilities. Qualifications Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree in international affairs, engineering, law, business, data science, or a closely related field. Preferred Education: Master’s Degree or other advanced degree (JD, MBA, MS in science/engineering fields). Required Experience: 5+ years of recent, relevant experience in higher education, government, law, or international compliance, including substantive knowledge of U.S. export control laws and federal research security requirements. Preferred Experience: 7+ years of experience in managing restricted party screening systems and processes, reviewing and assessing screening results, performing complex export control and secure research reviews, conducting compliance audits, monitoring, risk assessments, and investigations. Familiarity with federal export control and research security regulatory requirements and experience monitoring regulatory activity in higher education / academic research institutions / global organizational settings. Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of U.S. trade compliance laws (ITAR, EAR, OFAC) and their practical application to research administration; knowledge of electronic systems used in facilitating trade compliance (Export On-Demand, Visual Compliance, SNAP-R, AES, etc.). Salary: USD $110,000.00 to USD $150,000.00 base pay; NYU considers factors such as scope, responsibilities, experience, education, skills, internal equity, market and organizational considerations when offering a salary.
