Building Attendant

The Building Attendant is the city's primary on-site representative during assigned hours, with responsibility for evening and weekend use of John P. Murzyn Hall. The position supports safe, orderly, and successful facility use by monitoring activities; assisting renters, guests, and program participants; preparing rooms and equipment for scheduled programs and rentals; maintaining a clean, welcoming, and event-ready facility; enforcing facility policies; and opening, securing, and closing the building in accordance with city procedures. The Building Attendant works independently and with other staff, using sound judgment and providing courteous, professional service. The position is responsible for the facility's overall condition, readiness, and security throughout the assigned shift. Open until filled

Examples of Duties

• Serve as the city's primary on-site point of contact during assigned hours and provide courteous, informed assistance to renters, event hosts, program participants, guests, vendors, and other facility users.
• Act as the on-site liaison between facility users and the city by answering questions, helping resolve routine issues, communicating schedule or use concerns, and referring matters that require management action to the appropriate staff.
• Monitor activities throughout the building and grounds to promote safe, orderly, and appropriate use of the facility and to ensure compliance with rental agreements, posted rules, city policies, occupancy expectations, and scheduled use.
• Perform routine custodial and limited grounds work to keep the facility clean, sanitary, attractive, and ready for use. Duties include general care of restrooms, floors, carpets, common areas, trash and recycling, restroom supplies, entrances, litter, and snow and ice near building access points.
• Open and close the facility as scheduled; complete required checks of rooms, entrances, exits, restrooms, equipment, and grounds; and secure the building at the conclusion of use in accordance with city procedures.
• Observe facility conditions and respond appropriately to safety concerns, disruptive behavior, unauthorized access, property damage, equipment problems, maintenance needs, or other unusual situations. Contact the appropriate city staff or emergency services when warranted.
• Support scheduled events and activities by confirming room readiness, assisting users with facility-related questions, and setting up or taking down tables, chairs, audiovisual equipment, and other supplies or equipment as assigned.
• Attend and participate in required staff meetings, orientation sessions, and training programs, and maintain any certifications required for the assignment.
• Follow city safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment when handling cleaning chemicals, bodily-fluid cleanup, snow and ice products, or facility equipment.
• Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• At least 18 years of age.
• One year of customer service, public contact, recreation, hospitality, facility, security, custodial, or other related work experience.
• Ability to work assigned evening and weekend hours and occasional daytime hours based on facility schedules and operational needs.

Desired Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two or more years of public contact or customer service experience.
• Experience as a building attendant, facility attendant, caretaker, event attendant, recreation facility employee, custodian, or in a related role.
• Experience performing routine cleaning and custodial duties and safely using common cleaning products and equipment.
• Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
• Bilingual skills in Spanish, Somali, Amharic, Oromo, Hmong, Vietnamese and/or Lao.

• Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision and exercise sound judgment within established policies and procedures.
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing, and to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Ability to relate and work effectively with people from diverse cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds.
• Ability to perform the essential physical functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Work is performed primarily indoors in a public event and recreation facility, with occasional outdoor work near building entrances and grounds. The employee may encounter noise, crowds, cleaning chemicals, dust, wet surfaces, heat, and seasonal weather conditions. Evening and weekend work is expected, and the employee will work alone for portions of a shift. While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly stands and walks for extended periods; communicates in person and by phone or email; uses hands to handle tools, supplies, controls, and equipment; and bends, stoops, kneels, reaches, pushes, and pulls. The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and move tables, chairs, and related equipment using safe methods and available assistance.
