Position Overview The Upper School Dean of Academics is a key member of the Upper School leadership team, responsible to create, implement, assess, and refine the school’s academic vision within the context of the Upper School program. The Dean works in close partnership with faculty, counselors, families, and administrators to support students. Essential Responsibilities: Overseeing the Upper School course registration process, including the Course Expo event for students and families, which includes compiling the course book, registration for all students, problem solving, etc. Serving as a point person for individual student issues (e.g., a problem with a class that requires meetings with students, families, teachers, department chairs, me, etc.). This can also include working with individual teachers and department chairs on initiatives like improving engagement. Working with the Upper School Registrars on creating a report card timeline, reviewing report cards, and checking comments and managing the Main Scheduler creation process. Working with department chairs on various deadlines/responsibilities. Performing data analysis that draws from multiple sources as a way to improve teaching and learning. Coordinating placement testing by departments and Advanced Placement Program. With other administrators, coordinating and overseeing departmental reviews that focus on such topics as testing and grading practices, student engagement, and pedagogical effectiveness. Assisting with the International Baccalaureate Programme (Diploma Programme). Work with faculty regarding concerns about scheduling, student issues, etc. Help participate in the faculty hiring process. Participate in professional development and also help coordinate experiences for the Upper School faculty. Work closely with the Office of College and School Counseling on a range of topics. As needed; collaborate with other leadership teams (e.g.; technology in academics), participate in student, faculty and parent handbook review and publishing, support curriculum reviews and mapping work for the Upper School, and provide pedagogical coaching for faculty as needed. Participate as a member of the Upper School Leadership Team to join in decision‑making that helps to guide the division. Support academic initiatives as appropriate. Other responsibilities within the Upper School and across the entire school. Professional Growth & Collaboration Participate actively in department meetings, professional development sessions, and school‑wide initiatives. Complete required training and certifications, including professional learning opportunities such as the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) courses if applicable. Community & School Engagement Serve as a visible and active member of the school community, including attending events, chaperone events, advising clubs, and supporting student activities, both during and after school hours where needed. Maintain clear, respectful communication with students, families, and colleagues. Contribute to the school’s culture of belonging and inclusion through curriculum, relationships, and co‑curricular engagement. Qualifications & Requirements Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in education, counseling, or administration preferred. Minimum 3–5 years of experience in education or student life, preferably at the high school level. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with students, families, and staff. Excellent communication, organizational, and problem‑solving abilities. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in a school setting. Desired Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Experience in independent or college‑preparatory schools. Familiarity with restorative practices, or character education. Confidence working with parents, particularly in times of conflict or concern. Collaborative leadership style with a student‑centered approach. Bilingual or multicultural background a plus. Pre‑Employment Requirements Criminal Background Check, Level II Fingerprint Screening(s), and Drug screen.
