Deputy Sheriff

Overview This Deputy Sheriff Trainee position is available during the completion of the Colorado POST state certification and the initial field training program. Upon completion of training it will be assigned to either the Patrol Division or the Detention Division of Jefferson County. A $5,000 sign‑on bonus will be issued to candidates who successfully complete the 2027‑1 POST academy. The bonus is paid when the candidate transitions from Deputy Sheriff Trainee to Deputy Sheriff, per the training agreement. Job posting closes on 11/01/26 at 11:59 PM. Weekly hours: 40 hrs. Responsibilities Obtain a general knowledge of modern law‑enforcement practices, procedures, and investigation techniques. Understand county and federal laws concerning civil and criminal processes. Understand the content and purpose of legal papers and the practices involved in serving them. Learn principles and practices of criminal investigation. Understand local laws, ordinances, and state statutes governing the commitment, confinement, and release of prisoners. Develop skill in the use of firearms and other law‑enforcement equipment. Develop the following abilities: Apply interpretation of laws to specific situations. Present court testimony effectively. Exercise sound judgment in emergency and routine situations to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action. Additional job functions: Perform other related work as required. Qualifications Minimum training and experience: Sixty semester or ninety quarter hours from an accredited college/university (preferred). Special requirements: Must be 21 years of age. Must provide information for background investigation. Must submit to polygraph exam, criminal history check, medical exam, and psychological exam. Must work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Must have a valid Colorado driver’s license by hire date. Physical requirements: Physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment, including computers, protective gear, firearms, restraint devices, handcuffs, batons, radar units, first aid equipment, crime‑scene kits, blood kits, drug test kits, and two‑way radios. Must operate motor vehicles, including motorcycles, light pickup trucks, and 4‑wheel‑drive vehicles. Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, 35 pounds frequently, and 25 pounds constantly. Work may involve walking, standing, running, and physical confrontation. Physical demands are medium to heavy. Data conception: Ability to compare and judge data, people, or things against evident standards. Interpersonal communication: Ability to speak and signal people to convey or exchange information. Language ability: Ability to read various reports, forms, records, logs, handbooks, laws, maps, manuals, permits; prepare reports, forms, and lesson plans; speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence. Intelligence: Apply rational systems to solve practical problems and interpret diverse instructions. Verbal aptitude: Record, deliver, and explain information; follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively in legal, law‑enforcement, and emergency codes. Numerical aptitude: Utilize mathematical formulas, add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Form/spatial aptitude: Inspect items for proper length, width, and shape. Motor coordination: Coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately when using law‑enforcement equipment. Manual dexterity: Handle various items such as radios, firearms with high eye/hand/foot coordination for forceful arrest. Color discrimination: Differentiate between colors and shades. Interpersonal temperament: Deal with people under stress, in emergency situations, and adapt accordingly. Physical communication: Talk, hear, and use telephone and two‑way radio. Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Acquire general knowledge of street and road locations, geography, and socioeconomic characteristics of the county; prepare clear and concise reports; exercise tact, courtesy, and firmness with public and inmates; establish effective working relationships.
