Growing together.As Director of Software Engineering within Optum Insight Engineering AI, you will lead an organization of approximately 60 software engineers, including three Senior Engineering Managers. You will define and execute an engineering strategy focused on AI-first applications, modern platform architecture, streamlined healthcare workflows, and legacy modernization. The role will advance innovation through Generative AI, AWS and Azure cloud platforms, and modern engineering practices. This opportunity is well suited for a leader who can translate complex technology into business strategy, empower high-performing teams, and deliver scalable enterprise solutions.You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.Primary Responsibilities: Define and execute an engineering strategy aligned with AI-first priorities, continuous innovation, and technology modernization across healthcare productsLead and develop an engineering organization of approximately 60 employees, including three Senior Engineering Managers, while fostering a collaborative, high-performing cultureBuild and deploy AI-powered and Generative AI solutions that address complex business needs while applying responsible AI practicesUse enterprise-approved AI tools to automate engineering tasks, simplify workflows, and improve operational performanceOversee secure, scalable, and cost-efficient AWS and Azure cloud architectures that follow enterprise standardsLead legacy modernization, cloud migration, and process improvement across high-value engineering portfoliosAssess emerging technologies to guide solution design, architecture decisions, and strategic roadmapsManage engineering budgets, optimize cloud operating costs, and oversee third-party vendor relationshipsPartner with Product Management, Architecture, and executive stakeholders to translate technical strategy into clear business outcomes and client solutionsYou'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.Required Qualifications: 7+ years of experience in software engineering or a related technical field3+ years of people leadership experience overseeing engineering managers and/or multiple engineering teamsProven solid knowledge of modern software development, cloud platforms, and distributed systemsDemonstrated success delivering complex software solutions at enterprise scaleExperience managing complex, high-value portfolios that serve external clientsPreferred Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical disciplineProven expertise leading the development and deployment of GenAI and AI-powered solutions using low-code, no-code, and advanced platformsExperience with infrastructure as code tools, such as Terraform or CloudFormationProficiency in programming languages such as Java, Go, or Python, and containerization technologies such as Docker and KubernetesFamiliarity with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and site reliability engineering principlesDemonstrated success in legacy system modernization, technology stack migrations, and process optimizationProven experience partnering with Product Management and Architecture teams*All employees working remotely will be required to adhere to UnitedHealth Group's Telecommuter PolicyPay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
