Communication Access Facilitator This is not a State of Michigan position; it is a Michigan School for the Deaf contracted position. DESCRIPTION: The Communication Access Facilitatorwill facilitate communication access for staff and students. The Communication Access Facilitator may provide services for IEP Team meetings, personnel interviews, school tours, student needs, and support students in career technical education courses at Genesee Career Institute. This position may also interpret between Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Hearing persons, on and off the Michigan School for the Deaf campus, in situations including but not limited to business, financial, medical, legal, social, theatrical, and educational. The Communication Access Facilitator must be both qualified and effective in interpreting educational content. Elementary 4.0+ is preferred but not required. Michigan School for the Deaf will support the chosen candidate in pursuing additional elementary credentials, if the candidate prefers. BASIC FUNCTION:
• Interprets communications between hearing persons and deaf persons.
• Interprets academic instructional material to deaf students in the classroom.
• Attend classes with students and interpret instructions on a one-to-one basis in vocational classrooms such as Auto Technology, culinary, and computers.
• Interprets standardized tests and state assessments for deaf students, when needed.
• Provides interpretation during telephone conversations, when needed.
• Interprets for IEP Team Meetings and during related service times, if necessary.
• Maintains records.
• Interprets and ensures the student has understood the presented material.
• Performs related work as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School Diploma
• Req: Standard level 2 w/ medical / mental health endorsement.
• Pref: Standard level 3 w/ Legal, medical / mental health.
• Valid Michigan Interpreter Certification meeting the Educational Standard for either Pre-K through grade 6 or grade
7 through age 26 with an IEP, or both.
• Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ability to maintain compliance with Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct regarding clients, professionals, and employers.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to understand and get along well with deaf and hearing persons.
• Ability to fluently interpret communications between hearing persons and Deaf and hard of hearing persons.
• Ability to interpret at varied vocabulary, language, and educational levels.
• Ability to interpret work-related information such as instructions on how a particular tool operates.
• Ability to interpret the terminology of instructional material meaningful to the deaf.
• Ability to work well with professional staff.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to maintain favorable public relations.
• Knowledge of multicultural communications and linguistic needs of the deaf culture and the deaf community. WORK ENVIRONMENT :
Michigan School for the Deaf is a bilingual, bicultural school operated by the Michigan Department of Education. All students enrolled are Deaf and hard of hearing. The primary mode of communication is American sign language with written communication in English. Work is performed in an office, school, or community environment and involves continuous contact with staff, representatives of resident school districts, outside agencies, and members of the public. Physical effort will be required to walk on campus. Some travel is involved, including the possibility of overnight.
