Flexible Part-Time Recreation & Programs Specialist

Recreation Specialist The City of Coronado is accepting applications for the Recreation Specialist position. This posting will be used to fill multiple vacancies across divisions. Please complete the questionnaire to indicate your area of interest. Working hours are varied and flexible; not to exceed 29 hours per week or 1,000 hours per fiscal year. Front Desk & Daily Operations Employee will be based at the Coronado Community Center or John D. Spreckels Center and will provide phone and in‑person customer service, register patrons for programs, and offer general information. This role may also include preparing event spaces for usage and maintaining the center. Youth Programs and Camps Employee will be based at the Community Center, Club Room, or outdoor spaces. Responsibilities include assisting, developing, and leading recreation activities for youth such as after‑school, preschool, teen programs, and camps. Adult Programs / Senior Programs Employee will be based at the Community Center or John D. Spreckels Center and will work with adults and seniors, providing customer service to patrons utilizing the center and may assist, develop, and lead recreation programs. Inclusion Employee may serve at multiple locations to assist patrons with disabilities with activities. Rental Event Staff Employee will set up, take down, supervise, and act as a staff liaison during rental events at the Community Center, John D. Spreckels Center, or Club Room. Facility Rentals Employee will assist with facility rentals at the Community Center, providing in‑person and phone customer service, set up, take down, supervision, and liaison duties. Day Trips Employee will drive trips for participants of all ages to local sites and attractions. Possession of a CDL license with passenger endorsement is required, but training can be provided. Boathouse / Aquatics Employee will be based at the Coronado Boathouse and/or Coronado Aquatics facility and will conduct specialized recreation and/or aquatics activities. Tech Employee will provide tutorials, programs, and support to patrons seeking training on cellphone, computer, and tablet use at the John D. Spreckels Center. Parks & Beaches Employee will primarily work in the field, overseeing events, user groups, and programs at Coronado’s parks and beaches. Media and Marketing Employee will capture events and activities, boost social media outreach, manage marketing programs, and support department special projects. Youth and Adult Sports Employee will support and lead youth and adult sport leagues and activities. Key Responsibilities Organize, lead or teach a specialized recreation program, activity or class such as dance, gymnastics, sports, teens, special events, inclusion, preschool, day camp, or other recreational activities. Promote and coordinate a specific program, service, activity or class; prepare marketing materials including news releases, flyers, schedules, pamphlets, and brochures. Observe safety precautions, monitor and inspect facilities, and maintain cleanliness. Develop curriculum, maintain an activity calendar, prepare brochures, and modify activities and schedules as required. Supervise and monitor participant behavior; enforce rules, regulations, and disciplinary measures as needed. Evaluate programs for needed supplies and equipment; order or obtain supplies; issue supplies and equipment; monitor performance; recommend and implement modifications. Maintain records and develop reports on program effectiveness. Supervise, direct, and coordinate subordinate personnel. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Non‑essential Job Functions Develop survey instruments; conduct surveys of participants to determine needs, interpret results, and adjust programs accordingly. Experience At least three years of increasingly responsible experience in a specialized recreation program area. Education / Training Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in recreation, leisure studies, or a related field. Licenses and Certificates Valid Class C California Driver’s License with a safe driving record. Designated positions require possession, or ability to obtain, a valid California Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger Endorsement. Valid first aid certificate. Valid CPR certificate. Knowledge of Operations, services, and activities of specialized recreation programs. Principles and practices of recreation and leisure services program development. Methods and techniques of planning, organizing, implementing, and directing programs. Rules and equipment for specialized recreational activities. First aid and CPR techniques. Safety precautions and procedures within the assignment area. Record keeping practices. Marketing theories, principles, and practices applied to recreation programs. Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations. Ability to Develop and promote specialized programs. Coordinate and direct specialized recreation programs. Elicit community and organizational support. Handle disruptive behavior effectively. Respond to emergencies and administer first aid and CPR. Respond to public inquiries. Interpret and explain city policies and procedures. Communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective relationships. Supervise and coordinate lower‑level staff. Physical Demands The physical demands associated with this position include moderate to heavy lifting, standing, walking, and running for prolonged periods. Employees may be exposed to inclement weather, work indoor or outdoor facilities, travel from site to site, and may work extended hours including evenings and weekends. Productivity Incumbents must perform work efficiently, effectively, and timely with minimal direction. Mobility Incumbents are required to participate in assigned recreational activities which may involve moderate to heavy lifting, standing, walking, or running for prolonged periods. Environment Incumbents may be exposed to inclement weather, and work may take place indoors or outdoors, traveling between sites.
