Registered Nurse

The purpose of this position is to provide general nursing care to patients in specialized clinics, primary care clinics, schools and homes. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Essential functions include participating in quality assurance activities, assisting physicians and nurse practitioners in providing examinations, obtaining patient histories, giving immunizations, and providing prescribed tests, treatments and medicines to patients. Other duties involve performing nursing assessments and developing health care plans for patients seen in clinics, home and school settings, examining children for communicable diseases and for communicative disorders and making referrals, evaluating the growth and development of children and conferring with teachers, principals and parents regarding child health problems, assisting in preparing for specialized clinics, following clinic operational procedures, providing assessment of patient complaints and recommending appropriate action according to prescribed protocol, counseling patients regarding health status, risks, recommended actions, and community resources, organizing and scheduling field work, visiting homes of patients with communicable diseases to provide nursing services, inspecting premises for potentially hazardous conditions or infractions of sanitary codes and regulations and making appropriate referrals, instructing student nurses, providing individual and group health education instruction and information, maintaining medical records and preparing reports, conducting follow up consultations with patients concerning abnormal test results, assisting in orientation of nurses and other department personnel, and performing related work as assigned.

Minimum education and experience requirements include graduation from an accredited school of nursing approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing and being licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Kentucky or possessing a provisional license from Kentucky Board of Nursing and becoming a licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Kentucky prior to expiration of the provisional license. Other minimum requirements include being vaccinated for hepatitis B, having provided evidence of immunity, or having signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment, having reliable transportation, and possessing and maintaining a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
