Seasonal Research Technician - Chiswell

Overview This position is responsible for serving as a seasonal research technician with the Chiswell Island Steller sea lion remote video monitoring project. Education/Training Requirements A bachelor’s degree in biology, marine biology, zoology, or related field with two years of experience in a similar position preferred. Experience in biological field studies, including survey counts, behavioral observations, photo ID, and image processing of marine mammals. Preference for experience servicing and operating remote video monitoring equipment, scat collection and processing for diet and hormone analyses, and First Aid/CPR certified. Conducts behavioral and population monitoring of Steller sea lions by operating remote video cameras from an office setting. Conducts photo-identification of pinnipeds through remote video equipment, still imagery, or in the field as needed. Records population counts, behavioral observations, and other data using pre-defined protocols on a defined schedule. Ensures accurate record keeping in spreadsheet, database, and word processing formats. Supervises interns and volunteers in duties listed above. Leads and assists with maintenance and repair of remote monitoring equipment in the field. Assists with field work such as scat collections, biopsy darting, seabird surveys, and other work as assigned in remote Alaskan locations. Conducts laboratory work including cleaning, sorting, and subsampling pinniped scat samples, and processing other biological samples. Assists with laboratory maintenance as assigned. Assists Development Department with fundraising and database entry as needed. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, goodwill, cooperation, and providing high standards of service. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs. Performs other related duties as assigned. Other Skills and Abilities Skill in written and verbal communication, experience giving public presentations and/or working with various age groups in an educational setting, ability to understand and interpret research in progress and marine science topics, follow instructions, and work independently. Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Knowledge of basic research methods, data collection, and laboratory techniques as well as knowledge of and ability to operate cameras and other video recording equipment. Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Ability to climb steep uneven terrain and carry up to 50 lbs. on remote Alaskan islands and wilderness in highly variable weather conditions. Ability to swim, see and hear; walk while carrying objects in both hands; twist, bend, kneel, stand, and crouch for extended periods of time; use arms and hands; handle objects, tools, and controls; climb stairs and ladders; and sit for periods of time.
