Position Information Job Title: Substitute Athletic Trainer - Physical, Recreation & Health Education - Modesto Junior College Site: Modesto Junior College (MJC) – East and MJC – West Salary Range / Other: Range 40 – $30.19 per hour (2021-2022 Classified Salary Schedule) Type: Substitute Short Term Athletic Trainers may be called on short notice (same day) to fill in any shifts at any YCCD work-site Schedule: Monday – Friday; Up to 12 months per year (may include some weekends and evenings) Notes: Appointments are hired at the first step of the range; second step after one year of satisfactory service with subsequent steps annually to a maximum of sixth step Benefits: This work assignment is not eligible for District benefits. Workers’ Compensation is a covered benefit. Position Summary Definition: Under general administrative direction, provide for an effective program of first aid emergency care, injury prevention, athletic training and rehabilitation for student athletes in intercollegiate sports activities. Distinguishing Characteristics: Advanced working level class for athletic training within the YCCD. Incumbents perform highly complex and specialized duties and coordinate the operational needs of District athletic programs. Supervision: Receives general administrative direction from the assigned division dean. Does not directly supervise other full-time employees. Knowledge of: First aid and athletic taping; work under the direction of the team physician in injury care; modalities used in injury care. Principles, techniques and guidelines relative to athletic training at the collegiate level. CCCAA guidelines Equipment and supplies used in the sports medicine setting Recruiting students and expanding the student Athletic Training program Ability to: Educate student-athletes and athletic training students about injuries, illnesses, anatomy and physiology. Recognize severity of injury and refer athletes to appropriate medical personnel. Work with men’s and women’s athletic programs; communicate with coaches and staff; handle equipment and supplies; CPR/AED certified. Communicate clearly with students and staff, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and administration. Work independently and make decisions affecting YCCD athletic programs. Education and Experience Any combination of education, experience and/or training that would likely provide the above-required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. Typical background patterns: Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in athletic training, physical education, education or closely related field. Experience: Two years of responsible experience in practicing sports medicine, athletic training with student athletes. Special Requirements: None Example of Duties Provide for an effective and efficient program of first aid emergency care, injury prevention, athletic training and rehabilitation for student athletes in intercollegiate sports activities. Provide initial evaluation and emergency first aid for athletes requiring care, including follow-up care. Maintain student athletes’ health records; assist with team pre-season screenings; maintain inventory of equipment and supplies; help prepare orders for athletic training supplies. Under the direction of the team physician, design, develop, and supervise conditioning and reconditioning programs for student athletes. Responsible for daily maintenance and operation of the Athletic Treatment Center. Recognize injuries or conditions requiring medical care and determine appropriate modality uses. Serve as liaison between physician, other athletic trainers, coaches, student athletes and administration. Provide care for student athletes for participation in YCCD sports programs, including pre-participation health screenings. Attend assigned events and provide emergency first aid; administer CPR or AED, and care for minor injuries. Educate student athletes and trainees on care and prevention; provide concussion management per current standards. Mentor student interns under supervision; provide healthcare at games when hosting events; care for visiting teams as needed. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the Athletic Treatment Center; participate in college committees as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned. Licenses and Certificates Valid California driver’s license may be required, depending on assignment. NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainer in current good standing with the NATA. CPR / AED Certificate. Physical and Mental Standards Mobility: stand or sit for prolonged periods; ability to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach and twist. Dexterity: fine manipulation for keyboard use and handling papers. Lifting: up to 50 pounds. Visual: normal vision with or without correction. Hearing/Talking: ability to hear and communicate effectively. Emotional/Psychological Factors: decision-making and concentration; frequent contact with others. Working Conditions Outdoor field and standard office environments. Travel to different sites; may require evening and weekend hours.
