Vice President of Clinical Informatics

Role Overview

The Vice President of Clinical Informatics will serve as a senior leader responsible for advancing clinical informatics strategy across acute nursing and ancillary areas throughout the health system.

Reporting to the Chief Information Officer and Chief Medical Informatics Officer, this executive will work closely with clinical, operational, financial, and technology leadership to ensure information systems support organizational priorities, patient-centered care, and measurable improvements in clinical performance.

This leader will guide the evolution, adoption, optimization, and governance of clinical technology solutions while serving as a catalyst for organizational transformation. The role requires the ability to translate clinical and operational priorities into technology strategies, lead complex enterprise initiatives, and build alignment among executives, clinicians, IT teams, and other stakeholders.

The VP will be expected to challenge established practices when appropriate, promote innovation, and establish sustainable processes that maximize the value of the organization's electronic health record and related clinical technologies.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Informatics Strategy & Optimization

• Establish and execute a comprehensive informatics strategy supporting nursing, ancillary services, and other clinical environments.
• Lead efforts to improve the consistency, quality, usability, and effectiveness of clinical information systems.
• Evaluate current and emerging technology needs and translate them into near-, mid-, and long-range solution roadmaps.
• Provide executive oversight for the ongoing optimization, performance, and support of clinical applications.
• Develop technology-enabled approaches that improve care delivery, clinician workflows, patient engagement, and overall experience.
• Ensure technology investments remain aligned with organizational objectives and evolving clinical priorities.

Executive Leadership & Enterprise Initiatives

• Serve as an executive sponsor or strategic leader for major technology implementations, system acquisitions, and enterprise transformation initiatives.
• Direct multiple complex, high-visibility programs and ensure appropriate governance, resources, timelines, and accountability.
• Establish project objectives, deliverables, milestones, and success measures in collaboration with executive and operational leaders.
• Monitor initiatives to ensure delivery within approved scope, budget, schedule, quality, and risk parameters.
• Provide leadership and strategic direction to technology teams supporting clinical and operational requirements.
• Partner with senior executives to develop and implement organizational strategies related to clinical information systems.

Governance, Data & Security

• Establish and advance enterprise data governance practices in collaboration with business, clinical, financial, and technology stakeholders.
• Provide oversight for informatics governance and standardization groups.
• Ensure appropriate privacy, security, access, and regulatory controls are incorporated into electronic health record and clinical technology environments.
• Support compliance with HIPAA and other applicable privacy and security requirements.
• Collaborate with compliance and integrity functions to ensure appropriate agreements and controls are maintained with vendors, business associates, and other external partners.
• Review clinical technology contracts and agreements to ensure appropriate provisions are addressed, including security, privacy, service expectations, integration requirements, pricing adjustments, and termination provisions.

Financial & Resource Management

• Develop and manage annual operating budgets for assigned informatics functions.
• Create long-range capital plans for initiatives extending across multiple fiscal years.
• Evaluate capital requests and determine their alignment with the organization's broader technology and informatics priorities.
• Partner with finance leadership to establish appropriate project costing and allocation methodologies.
• Ensure informatics investments are appropriately prioritized and demonstrate organizational value.

People Leadership & Organizational Development

• Lead human resource activities for clinical informatics personnel, including recruitment, performance management, professional development, workforce planning, and employee coaching.
• Establish career-development and growth opportunities for informatics professionals.
• Provide strategic direction to informatics education and adoption functions.
• Develop education, adoption, and sustainment strategies for clinical technology initiatives.
• Establish meaningful performance indicators to evaluate adoption, effectiveness, and ongoing sustainability.
• Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Change Management & Adoption

• Serve as a visible change leader during major clinical, operational, and technology transformations.
• Develop organizational change strategies in partnership with executive and clinical leadership.
• Build understanding, confidence, and commitment among clinicians and other stakeholders affected by technology and process changes.
• Promote adoption of standardized workflows and technology-enabled practices.
• Identify barriers to successful implementation and develop practical strategies to address them.
• Encourage a culture that supports innovation while maintaining appropriate controls and minimizing operational risk.

Professional Engagement

• Maintain awareness of emerging developments and proven practices in healthcare clinical informatics.
• Participate in professional associations, industry forums, user groups, and national conferences to exchange knowledge and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Apply relevant industry trends and lessons learned to the organization's informatics strategy.
• Build strong relationships across clinical, operational, technology, and executive communities.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Master's degree in an appropriate healthcare, clinical, informatics, business, technology, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

Professional Experience

• Minimum of seven years of progressive experience managing clinical information systems within a multi-facility healthcare or hospital environment.
• Demonstrated experience providing leadership across complex clinical informatics programs and enterprise technology initiatives.
• Experience working collaboratively with senior executives, physicians, nurses, ancillary leaders, IT professionals, and other organizational stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to lead large-scale change, develop strategic roadmaps, manage budgets, and drive adoption of clinical technology solutions.
