Wastewater Maintenance Technician

The Wastewater Division of the City of Canby Public Works Department has an exciting career opportunity for a Wastewater Maintenance Technician that possesses the ability to perform journey level equipment preventative maintenance and repair of wastewater mechanical equipment and systems. This multifaceted position will work with a dynamic operations team and will primarily focus on repair and preventative maintenance work, while completing a variety of operational tasks in a collaborative work environment. A limited maintenance electrician (LME) license is desired. The anticipated work schedule is Monday through Thursday 6 am to 4:30 pm, with an on‑call and weekend plant check rotation. Maintain and operate the City’s wastewater treatment plant equipment and facilities under the guidance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor. Responsibilities include performing preventive maintenance, repairing equipment, troubleshooting electrical issues, calibrating instruments, managing inventory of critical parts, and maintaining the computerized maintenance management system. This role requires a blend of technical proficiency, analytical thinking, and problem‑solving abilities to ensure equipment reliability, monitor system performance, and maintain compliance with environmental regulations. Participation in the on‑call rotation is required as needed. Supervisory Responsibilities Perform routine plant maintenance and cleaning activities, implement appropriate repairs to equipment, grounds and buildings. Calibrate analyzers and meters (PH meters, D.O meters, level transducers, valve actuators, etc.) using established manufacturer guidelines. Conduct routine meter readings, follow established schedules and enter data into applicable computerized system. Understand and maintain accurate records of systems operation and maintenance. Daily operation and monitoring of 2‑meter belt press. Drive and operate a variety of vehicles and equipment including mowers, forklifts, and front end loaders. Install, maintain, operate, and repair all types of industrial machinery including but not limited to pumps, motors, variable frequency drives, piping, compressors, conveyors, tanks, sweeps, blowers, mixers, gear boxes, hydraulic systems, spiral screens, grit separators, clarifiers, aeration systems, solids handling equipment, UV disinfection equipment, flow meters, fans, heating and ventilation equipment, telemetry, instrumentation and programming. Monitor, understand, and maintain Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system (SCADA). Perform preventative, corrective, and predictive maintenance on treatment plant and collection system equipment. This includes lubricating, cleaning, and replacing parts. Complete and maintain electronic maintenance records, checklists, and daily logs. Update the parts inventory and order parts as needed. Work with contractors on maintenance work performed at the plant and pump stations. Work with operations staff on appropriate maintenance procedures. Fill in as a wastewater treatment plant operator as needed; train to recognize plant status, troubleshoot and perform corrective actions of the plant operations to ensure discharged water quality meets or exceeds the standards of EPA and the State of Oregon. Work safely observing all OSHA, Federal, State, and City regulations. On a rotational basis, collect and analyze samples using established laboratory procedures to ensure compliance with EPA and State of Oregon regulations. Provide assistance to other staff as workload and staffing levels dictate. Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner. Comply with safety requirements of the position and actively promote safe work practices. May be required to respond to after‑hours emergencies and other work‑related situations. Maintain cooperative working relationships with City staff, other organizations, and the public. Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned. Competency Profile Ability to use tools and equipment utilized in grounds maintenance such as shovels, rakes, trimmers, edgers, mowers, and other miscellaneous hand power tools. Requires a working knowledge of tools used in the general diagnostic and repair of pumps, motors, and control panels such as screw drivers, wrenches, feeler gauges, wheel pullers, micrometers, general purpose electrical testers etc. Reading and understanding general assembly and maintenance directions. Ability to read blueprints and piping diagrams. Redirect flows for maintenance or operations during plant repairs or upgrades. Ability to obtain Oregon Grade I Wastewater Operator Certificate or Grade I Wastewater Treatment Operator Certificate within 18 months. Valid Oregon Driver’s license required. May also require possession of or ability to obtain any of the following certifications: current CPR/first aid card, bloodborne pathogen training, work zone traffic safety certification, forklift certification, confined space entry, and/or hazardous material certification. Requires knowledge of operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. Ability to receive work direction and convey clear precise information related to equipment performance and process control. Ability to interpret basic test results from wastewater lab to implement basic process control strategies. Basic Computer skills. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) 4 years of progressive technical experience and training that provides the applicable advanced journey level knowledge and skills directly related to Wastewater and/or industrial process equipment that includes two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of pumps and pump motors Possession of a State of Oregon Journey Level Certificate in a work‑related trade such as millwright, maintenance mechanic, or welder, or a combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the duties of the job as those listed above may be considered. Oregon Grade I or provisional Grade I Wastewater Treatment Operator Certificate or ability to obtain within 18 months. Valid Driver’s license with acceptable driving record required. Preferred Qualifications Limited Maintenance Electrician License HVAC Certification Crane, Hoist, and Rigging Certification Welding Certification Previous experience in a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Any certifications relevant to the maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. Mental effort Normal concentration and attention to detail with normal deadlines. Physical effort High: The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching, or crawling in restricted areas. Work environment Moderate Risks/Discomforts: 70 % of the work period requires special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields. Normal/office environment 30 % of the work period. May be subject to call‑out after normal hours and may be included in pager duty rotation.
