Job Summary

We are looking for a strong mid-level Instrument Designer to join our engineering team in the Houston area. You will produce and check instrumentation deliverables for industrial projects and take ownership of small scopes of work with minimal supervision.

Job Description

• Develop and maintain instrumentation deliverables in SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), including the Index and Wiring modules.
• Read and interpret P&IDs to identify instruments, control loops, and I/O requirements.
• Reproduce instrument design documents in SI (INtools...), including:
  • Wiring block diagrams
  • Marshalling wiring drawings
  • Junction box wiring drawings
  • Instrument power distribution drawings
  • Loop drawings
  • I/O loading reports
• Check reports and data for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to project standards.
• Work with engineers, electrical and controls designers, and other disciplines to resolve design questions and incorporate markups.
• Plan, organize, and deliver small scopes of work independently, including tracking progress and communicating status to the lead engineer or project manager.

Skills Required

• Minimum of 5 years of instrument design experience, ideally in oil and gas, petrochemical, refining, or industrial process facilities.
• Proficiency in SmartPlant Instrumentation, including the Index and Wiring modules.
• Demonstrated ability to read P&IDs and interpret instrument wiring block diagrams, marshalling wiring, junction box wiring, power distribution, loop drawings, electrical schematics, I/O loading reports, and location plans.
• Working ability in AutoCAD.
• Strong attention to detail, with the discipline to work through drawing and data revisions accurately.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a project team.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple deliverables to meet schedule.
• Experience with SmartPlant Instrumentation databases with report or drawing template customization preferred.
• Familiarity with industry codes and standards such as ISA, NEC, and API, and with hazardous area classification requirements preferred.
• Experience with brownfield modification and revamp projects preferred.
• Prior experience mentoring junior designers or drafters preferred.

Education/Training/Certifications

• Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Instrumentation, Electrical.
