Van Driver (Full Time)

Full Time Van Driver - Will Train Route assignment: 4-6 hours. Step 0 pay: $22.52. Qualifications Must be 21 years of age. Physically capable of performing a daily pre‑trip inspection as mandated. Physically able to wear a seat belt. Subject to an annual physical examination. Meet criteria established by the Ohio Department of Education, Form T‑8. Complete pre‑service and in‑service training per Rule 3301‑83‑10 of the Administrative Code. Hold a current driver’s license. Demonstrate ability to cope with stressful situations related to all students, including those with disabilities. Possess or upgrade skills through formal and/or in‑service training related to transportation of students, including those with disabilities. Have a satisfactory work history and driving record verified by references and a report from the State Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, FBI, BMV, or local law enforcement. Have an understanding of the role of pupil transportation in the educational program and meet all physical, mental, and moral requirements set by state laws and local board policies. Pass pre‑employment drug screen and all job‑related drug and alcohol screens as required under Ohio law. Reporting and Supervision Reports to: Transportation Coordinator. Supervises: Children who are passengers on the bus. Position Goal To provide safe and efficient transportation of students. Evaluation Performance evaluated by the Transportation Coordinator. Drivers are evaluated once a year prior to obtaining a continuing contract, then once every three years. Additional evaluations may be conducted if deemed necessary. Performance Criteria Keep the van clean; acquire necessary repairs and service. Complete mandated pre‑trip inspection before each drive. Comply with all Ohio laws, ODE, and district policies related to drug/alcohol testing. Obey all traffic laws and district policies. Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school vans. Keep to assigned schedule and route. Directly supervise students in the van at all times, maintaining alertness to behavior. Maintain firm, fair, and consistent discipline. Enforce school van regulations per handbook and bus rules. Report undisciplined students to proper authority in writing. Pick up and discharge students only at authorized stops. Transport only authorized students. Complete route timing sheets, timesheets, and other required reports/forms. Notify authorities of mechanical failure or delay and hazardous road conditions. Report all accidents and complete reports within 24 hours. Attend all safety workshops and meetings as required by district. Keep van fueled at all times; supervise fueling and report spills. Use proper grammar and spelling on disciplinary forms and reports. Use bus radio professionally and only for school/safety business. Report all on‑ and off‑duty traffic violations to supervisor before returning to work. Maintain mature and proper behavior while on duty and on school property. Carry license at all times when on duty, as Ohio law requires. Follow Ohio law and district policy regarding cell phones and electronic devices (may not be used while students are present). Idles only as needed: 5 minutes warm‑up, extended to 10 minutes below 32°F. Shut engine off when parked on school property for 3+ minutes (except when using a handicapped lift); do not restart until all students boarded. Personal Qualities Maintain well‑groomed appearance. Follow district and departmental policies for requesting days/time off. Human Relations Communicate concerns directly to the Transportation Coordinator. Cooperate with the Transportation Coordinator and other drivers. Use discretion in school and job‑related matters. Be diplomatic when dealing with parents. Contact parents and attempt to resolve problems. Maintain good rapport with students. Obtain pre‑approval for memos or notes to parents of all students on the bus route. School‑Community Relations Communicate a positive image of the school district at all times. Maintain confidentiality of school and department related issues. Defuse rumors regarding school matters among drivers or community.
