Position Title: Chairman of Critical Care
Department: Critical Care Services
Reports To: Chief Medical Officer (CMO)

Position Overview:

The Chairman of Critical Care is tasked with managing the strategic, clinical, and operational aspects of the organization’s critical care services, which encompass the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CT ICU), Neuro Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU), and two Medical Intensive Care Units (Medical ICUs). This individual will lead efforts to enhance patient care, advocate for best practices, and ensure seamless integration and coordination among all critical care units. The Chairman will be instrumental in developing policies, establishing clinical standards, and nurturing a culture focused on safety, quality, and ongoing improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Oversight:

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for the CT ICU, Neuro ICU, and two Medical ICUs, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission and objectives.
  • Manage daily clinical operations, including staffing, resource distribution, and performance oversight across critical care units.
  • Set and uphold high standards for patient care, ensuring compliance with national accreditation, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Promote evidence-based practices in critical care medicine to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Encourage collaboration and integration between critical care units and other hospital departments, such as emergency services, surgery, and administration.

Clinical Excellence & Quality Improvement:

  • Lead the creation and execution of clinical protocols and best practices across critical care units to guarantee high-quality, evidence-based care.
  • Initiate continuous quality improvement (CQI) and patient safety efforts, focusing on reducing hospital-acquired infections, enhancing ICU efficiency, and implementing best practices in critical care.
  • Track patient outcomes, identify areas for enhancement, and spearhead initiatives to address clinical performance gaps.
  • Act as a clinical resource for physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals, providing guidance on complex patient care issues.

Strategic Planning & Growth:

  • Formulate long-term strategic plans for the expansion and development of critical care services, identifying opportunities for service line growth and technological advancements.
  • Work with hospital leadership to establish the budget for critical care services, ensuring effective resource allocation and financial management.
  • Assess emerging trends in critical care to keep the organization at the forefront of advanced clinical practices, including the adoption of new technologies and treatment models.

Staff Development & Education:

  • Guide and mentor physicians, fellows, residents, and nursing staff within critical care units, fostering a culture of continuous professional development.
  • Lead efforts in recruiting, retaining, and developing a high-performing team of critical care physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Encourage a collaborative and patient-centered approach among interdisciplinary teams in the critical care environment.

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Serve as a liaison between critical care units and hospital leadership to relay operational, clinical, and financial performance information.
  • Ensure effective communication with patients' families regarding treatment plans, prognoses, and critical care decisions.
  • Engage in cross-departmental collaboration with other specialties, including cardiology, neurology, respiratory therapy, and pharmacy, to enhance integrated patient care.
  • Represent critical care services in hospital committees, boards, and external partnerships, advocating for the needs and growth of the department.

Research & Innovation:

  • Encourage and support research in critical care medicine, promoting staff involvement in clinical trials and studies that advance knowledge in the field.
  • Establish partnerships with academic institutions to foster research and academic excellence, ensuring the integration of cutting-edge research into clinical practice.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), or an equivalent medical degree.
    • Board certification in critical care medicine or a relevant subspecialty.
  • Experience:
    • A minimum of 10 years of clinical experience, including at least 5 years in leadership roles within critical care or related fields.
    • A proven history of leadership in ICU management, quality improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire, influence, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
    • Strong communication abilities, effectively engaging with staff, hospital leadership, and patients' families.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of critical care clinical practices, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
    • Robust analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on continuous improvement.

Additional Requirements:

  • Current medical licensure and relevant certifications in NJ.
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development and staying updated with advancements in critical care medicine.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a full-time position, which may include on-call responsibilities.
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday hours may be necessary based on operational demands.
  • Clinical responsibilities may involve direct patient care in the ICU environment.
