Overview Description A deputy sheriff shall, at all times within the limits of his/her ability, protect life and property, preserve the peace, prevent crime, detect and arrest violators of the law, and enforce the laws of the United States, State of Nevada, and the ordinances of Mineral County in which the Sheriff’s Department has jurisdiction. This is a journey‑level classification requiring functioning at a fully‑experienced level and POST certification. The position may be performed alone, with a partner, or as part of a unit. It differs from the next higher‑level class by the lack of supervisory responsibilities for subordinate officers. Essential Functions Patrol streets, parks, and commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the law, control vehicular traffic, prevent or detect and investigate misconduct involving misdemeanors, felonies, and other law violations, and serve as a deterrent to potential crime. Respond to emergency radio calls or witness reports and investigate accidents, felonies, misdemeanors, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, illegal drug activities, etc.; initiate appropriate law enforcement action. Question witnesses, suspects, drivers, and others; collect and preserve evidence and maintain chain of custody; arrest potential violators. Conduct follow‑up investigations of crimes; question victims; develop leads and tips; search crime scenes for clues; analyze and evaluate evidence and arrest offenders. Plan, research, and gather intelligence including surveillance for criminal investigations. Maintain contact with command personnel to coordinate investigative activities; provide mutual assistance during emergency situations; provide general information about department activities. Handle fingerprints, photographs, searches, transports, and safeguards of those in custody; process the admission and/or release of persons in custody including the preparation of booking reports and release forms. Investigate and render assistance at scenes of vehicular accidents; summon ambulances and other law enforcement assistance; take measurements and draw diagrams of scenes. Prepare a variety of reports and records including officer’s/sheriff’s daily logs, investigation reports, field interrogation reports, alcohol reports, influence reports, breathalyzer checklists, bad check forms, vehicle impound forms, traffic hazard reports, affidavits, and serve warrants. Give testimony in court proceedings and work with staff of the appropriate attorney’s office to prepare cases. Interact with schools, social agencies, juvenile probation staff, families, and youths in the appropriate resolution of juvenile matters. Maintain departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities. Participate in required departmental training such as firearms, defensive driving, and report writing. Qualifications Knowledge Of Basic modern law enforcement principles, methods, and techniques. Basic criminal, law enforcement, and related provisions of the NRS. Care, protection, and appropriate usage of firearms and other law enforcement equipment. Basic concepts of criminal law, including laws and constitutional provisions relating to arrest, search and seizure, rules of evidence, court procedure, and detention. Basic techniques to diffuse anger or hostility of others. Resources in the community that help deal with family, domestic, juvenile, and victim issues. Basic first aid techniques. Skills To Using and caring for firearms. Writing and recording information gained when interviewing victims, suspects, and witnesses. Creating and maintaining accurate and complete records. Working independently in the absence of supervision. Exercising sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions. Ability To Learn the applicable provisions of state, federal, and local laws and ordinances, as well as departmental rules and regulations. Enforce laws, ordinances, and regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality. Perform work requiring good physical condition. Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Follow verbal and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with the public, peers, supervisors, and others. Observe situations analytically and objectively. Record events and interactions clearly and completely with attention to relevant details. React quickly and calmly in emergencies. Diffuse or control volatile or potentially volatile situations. Maintain confidentiality where appropriate. Learn the layout and geography of the jurisdiction to which one is assigned. Develop skills in the use and care of firearms. Develop advanced skills in the operation of a motor vehicle. Benefits Graveyard shift differential $1.50/Hr. Twelve (12) paid holidays. 120 hours annual leave per year. 120 hours sick leave per year. $1,500 uniform allowance annually. Employer‑paid PERS Retirement (Benefit Value 40.5% of base wage). Additional Requirements Applicants must pass a physical fitness exam. Applicants must pass a written exam before interviewing with an oral board.
