Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)/Medical Assistant (MA)

LPN or Certified Medical Assistant SUMMARY : Under general supervision of the medical oncologist, nurse practitioner, or registered nurse, the Licensed Practical Nurse assists in assessing, analyzing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting nursing care for the patient and provides direct patient care. The LPN also assists with tasks necessary for the general operation and organization of the Nursing unit.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Practice Assessment Assists patients with completing history and physical forms. Assesses vital signs (height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, pulse oximetry, blood sugar). Documents medications, allergies, smoking status, pain level, family history and other indicators. Charts using EMR. Assesses physical, psychological, and educational needs. Assesses care needs and changes during treatments and communicates findings. Planning Assists in coordinating care plans, follow-ups, transfusions, and order processing. Schedules chemotherapy and other treatments, coordinates provider orders, and works with pharmacy staff. Assists in preparation and transfer of patients. Implementation Provides nursing care per plan. Assists provider with interventions, exams, specimen collection. Coordinates with laboratory staff and helps with specimen handling. Administers injections under supervision. Ensures accurate documentation in EMR or pharmacy system. Uses EPIC for documentation. Patient Education Provides and reinforces teaching with brochures, handouts, answering questions. Documents educational needs and interventions. Refers to team members as needed. Evaluation and Documentation Documents observations, interventions, and responses. Answers calls promptly, professionally, with empathy. Attends to signatures on consent forms. Takes provider orders and follows through. Responds to urgent orders (“PANIC”), STAT, etc. Other Duties Rooms patients and logs documentation. Directs patients and families to exam or treatment areas. Cleans exam and infusion rooms; disinfects surfaces; ensures readiness. Provides telephone and general office support (calls, chart prep, filing). Stocks supplies and replenishes inventory. Complies with safety regulations and PPE requirements. Uses safety devices and follows Universal Precautions, hand washing, etc. Professional Communication Maintains confidentiality. Interacts appropriately with diverse patients. Provides calming information; conveys acceptance and caring. Maintains professional relationships and conveys information to team. Communicates and coordinates with internal contacts (physicians, RN, LPN, medical assistants, lab staff, secretaries, scheduling, billing, patient care coordinator, other facilities). Communicates and coordinates with external contacts (research staff, home health, hospice, labs, pharmacies, etc.). Obtains and follows provider orders (blood orders, PT, OT, equipment, hospice, case management, pre‑certifications). Relays information via computer, telephone, fax, pager, etc.; prioritizes messages and follows through. Coordinates with insurance for pre‑certifications. Proficient in EMR, documents thoroughly. Teamwork Works collaboratively. Reports on patient conditions to required parties while maintaining confidentiality. Assists with general unit operations. Maintains positive attitude with patients and coworkers. Professional Development Attends staff meetings and mandatory in‑services. Participates in continuing education and maintains licensure. Contributes to quality improvement initiatives.

OTHER DUTIES

Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of accredited practical nursing program. Current licensure in Illinois as LPN. Current CPR certification or willingness to obtain. Complete EPIC training and pass required tests.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of nursing processes and ability to demonstrate clinical competency. Ability to work with patients with cancer, immunosuppression, acute, chronic, complex conditions, including terminal care. Can manage fast‑paced, demanding environment. Strong verbal and written English; competent documentation. Organized, multitask, interpersonal skills. Understanding of confidentiality, HIPAA, CCSI/POMS policies. Positive attitude toward team and diverse patient populations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Standing, walking, sitting, carrying up to 50 lbs, pushing, pulling, balancing, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, twisting, reaching, handling, kneeling, wrist and digital dexterity. May move patients via lifts, ambulation, and transfers on gurneys, beds. Requires hearing, speaking, visual acuity, ability to interpret instructions and operate equipment. May support persons approximately 200 lbs; may drive occasionally.
