Position Summary The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) performs a variety of complex chemical, microscopic, hematologic, serologic, bacteriologic, and immunohematology testing procedures used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The Medical Laboratory Scientist applies advanced laboratory techniques in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and Serology while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of patient test results. In partnership with the Laboratory Technical Director and Medical Director, the CLS provides technical oversight of Blood Bank operations, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and accreditation requirements while supporting quality improvement initiatives and transfusion safety programs. Essential Responsibilities Clinical Laboratory Testing Perform complex laboratory testing in Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, and Microbiology. Analyze and interpret laboratory results for accuracy and clinical significance. Perform quality control procedures and corrective actions as necessary. Maintain accurate documentation of patient testing and laboratory activities. Troubleshoot instrumentation and testing issues to ensure uninterrupted laboratory operations. Ensure timely reporting of critical and routine laboratory results. Blood Bank & Transfusion Services Perform compatibility testing, antibody identification, crossmatching, and transfusion-related testing. Maintain compliance with all Blood Bank regulatory standards and accreditation requirements. Monitor Blood Bank quality assurance and quality control programs. Participate in hospital blood utilization and transfusion safety initiatives. Assist with Blood Bank policy development, review, and implementation. Serve as a technical resource for laboratory personnel regarding transfusion medicine and Blood Bank procedures. Quality & Regulatory Compliance Support ongoing compliance with CLIA, CAP, state regulations, and accreditation standards. Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement, and proficiency testing activities. Maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and competency documentation. Assist with inspections, audits, and accreditation surveys. Ensure proper maintenance and performance verification of laboratory equipment. Qualifications Education Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related science from an accredited institution. Current ASCP certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) , Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) , Medical Technologist (MT) , or equivalent certification required. Experience Minimum of two (2) years of experience performing Blood Bank testing and transfusion services. Experience in a hospital laboratory environment preferred. Strong knowledge of Blood Bank regulations, quality systems, and transfusion medicine practices. Knowledge & Skills Comprehensive operational knowledge of all major laboratory departments. Strong understanding of laboratory quality control and quality assurance principles. Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and critical thinking abilities. Effective communication and collaboration skills. Ability to work independently while contributing to a team-oriented laboratory culture.
