Environmental Health Inspector – Consumer Protection Location: San Francisco, CA. Department: San Francisco Department of Public Health. The mission is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. The Population Health Division provides core public health services, including health protection, promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Responsibilities Enforce provisions of health, housing, planning, air pollution, safety, industrial relations, agricultural, penal, and other applicable codes. May specialize in any sub‑area. Investigate complaints involving buildings and take action to abate violations. Coordinate with city departments such as building, electrical, plumbing, fire, and police codes; serve as a witness in court and testify in related matters. Conduct complaint inspections of dwellings, hotels, apartment houses, and business establishments, checking sanitation, structural and operational maintenance, lighting, ventilation, occupancy, and safety. Detect violations, coordinate enforcement efforts, perform follow‑up inspections to ensure corrections, and prepare condemnation reports when necessary. Inspect noise source sites, determine the source, prepare legal notices of code violations, recommend corrective actions, and prepare cases for the Variance Board. Inspect food and drink establishments to detect violations, order necessary corrections, advise on proper handling and sanitary methods, and conduct sampling for lab analysis. Investigate foodborne illnesses, issue or revoke permits, and appear in hearings as required. Conduct miscellaneous inspections such as laundry establishments, ambulatory homes for the aged, animal boarding facilities, poison oak growth, refuse removal rate disputes, rodent and mosquito complaints, swimming pool applications, water supply permits, and backflow prevention devices. Perform other special and miscellaneous duties, including hazardous materials surveys, domestic water sampling, recreational water assessments, and participation in meetings and educational conferences. Perform other duties as assigned or required. Minimum Qualifications Possession of a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health Services.
