Health Careers And Sports Medicine Teacher
Directly responsible for the quality instruction of Health Careers and Sports Medicine classes to students in grades 9–12. Instruction includes foundational health science concepts, sports medicine principles, anatomy and physiology, healthcare systems, safety and infection control, wellness, ethics, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and career exploration aligned to Washington State CTE Health Science and Sports Medicine standards. Immediate supervisor: CTE Director and High School Principal
Required Qualifications:
- Possess or be eligible for a Washington State CTE Teaching Certificate with a Sports Medicine or Health Science endorsement
Preferred Qualifications:
- Endorsement in Sports Medicine or Health Science CTE content area
- Experience teaching 9–12 Health Careers and/or Sports Medicine classes
- Experience working in healthcare, athletic training, or clinical settings
- Experience in school leadership and/or Career & Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs)
Essential Job-Related Activities:
Shared Responsibilities:
- Create and implement lessons aligned with PHS/PSD curriculum requirements, Washington State Essential Standards, and Washington State CTE Frameworks
- Advise and work with Career & Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs)
- Create a welcoming and caring learning environment
- Develop formative and summative assessments that demonstrate student learning
- Design and implement successful lab activities and hands-on learning experiences that supplement/initiate learning
- Differentiate instruction for different types and levels of student learning including IEP and 504 accommodations
- Attend IEP/504 and intervention meetings for the purpose of student support
- Organize the physical setting and model behaviors conducive to learning
- Organize individual, small group, and large group learning activities appropriate to the students, subject matter, and desired outcomes
- Maintain accurate records of student information, certifications, and assessment data
- Regularly demonstrate professionalism in appearance, actions, decisions, and overall performance
- Participate in building/district in-service activities, professional growth opportunities, curricular planning, and collaboration time
- Understand the unique needs of high school students
- Work positively with a wide variety of people both inside and outside the organization
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and community partners
- Meet multiple demands in pressure situations and maintain high levels of quality work
- Maintain confidentiality
- Deal with the public, other agencies, and district employees in a positive and productive manner
- Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing
- Work with minimal supervision and be flexible
Health Careers Expectations:
- Teach foundational concepts including medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, healthcare systems, ethics and legal responsibilities, safety and infection control, wellness and disease prevention, and healthcare career exploration
- Provide opportunities for students to engage with healthcare professionals, clinical observations, simulations, and career exploration activities
- Integrate employability, teamwork, communication, and leadership skills into instruction
- Ensure classroom and laboratory safety procedures are followed, including infection control and bloodborne pathogen standards
- Support students in exploring post-secondary pathways and careers within the healthcare field
Sports Medicine Expectations:
- Teach foundational sports medicine concepts including injury prevention and assessment, rehabilitation and recovery techniques, human anatomy and movement, fitness and conditioning principles, sports-related emergency response, athletic taping and support techniques, and sports medicine career exploration
- Design and implement lab-based and practical learning opportunities related to sports medicine and athletic performance
- Promote safe practices related to physical activity, athletic participation, and injury prevention
- Collaborate with athletic staff, coaches, and community partners when appropriate to support authentic learning experiences
- Support students in exploring post-secondary pathways and careers within sports medicine, athletic training, and related healthcare professions
Terms of Contract:
- Salary: $35,075 - $66,110 per year, placement based on experience and level of education
- Length of Contract:.6 FTE, 180 days plus professional development days
- Leaves/Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability coverage is provided through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year. Retirement benefits are provided through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Additional benefits may include sick/emergency leave and personal leave as per the collective bargaining agreement between the Pullman Education Association (PEA) and the Pullman School District ( Pullman Public Schools - Pullman Education Association ).
