The bridge maintenance worker performs bridge maintenance and repair activities on bridges in the state highway system. Responsibilities are performed under general supervision.


Responsibilities - What you'll do

• Perform routine and emergency repairs to bridges, including concrete bridge repairs and structural steel repairs, paint and seal bridge caps, and perform deck repair and replacement.
• Paint structural steel bridges, including hanging scaffolding, cleaning and preparing bridge surfaces for painting, and mixing and applying paint using conventional or airless paint sprayers and related equipment.
• Assist in preventative maintenance functions on bridges in the state highway system.
• Set up traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and flags; flag traffic for work zones.
• Operate vehicles and equipment to transport materials and crew to job sites; clean and perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.

Qualifications - All you need for success

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED/HiSET
• Valid driver's license
• A passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver's license (CDL) exam is required prior to hire date. Must pass the driving portion of the CDL exam with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions (Class B), and interstate status (either Excepted Interstate [EI] or NonExcepted Interstate [NI]) within 60 days of hire.
• Employee will be required to pass a cardiopulmonary function test yearly, attend training on the use of respirators, and pass a respirator fit test every six months.
• Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.

Special Working Conditions:

• Job requires significant physical stamina and endurance.
• Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
• Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
