Events Leader (Suffolk)

Our Volunteer Events Leaders help connect people to nature and encourage them to take action for butterflies and moths. At Butterfly Conservation, we want to create a world where butterflies and moths are enjoyed by everyone, forever. We need volunteers to help organise and lead events so we can get even more people involved in our work. You might help at public events, lead guided butterfly walks or run moth trap opening events. You can choose how and when you volunteer. You will be volunteering with a wide range of people, so that must appeal to you. This role would also suit you if you’re interested in helping us to connect people to nature. We want to get as many people involved in our national campaigns as possible – whether it’s the Big Butterfly Count or by creating Wild Spaces. If you would like to chat about the ways in which you can volunteer, please contact Peter Maddison; View email address on click.appcast.io Volunteer role Events Leader Volunteer manager Engagement Team Where you will be based Outdoors Why we want you To co‑ordinate volunteers and equipment for individual events, such as running a stand at a show. To ensure that your volunteer group is working safely, and that information about the group is reported to BC staff as requested. What you will be doing Ensure all volunteers are briefed at least two weeks before the event, liaising with event organisers where applicable. Ensure that risk assessments are in place and volunteers are briefed. Support Butterfly Conservation’s Goals by tailoring the Branch events offer as advised by BC staff. Inform the Events Co‑ordinator if more stock is required. Ensure any monies taken at the event are recorded and handed over to the Branch Treasurer or BC staff. The skills you need Able to communicate key messages to a variety of audiences. Willing to work with staff and other volunteers as part of a team. Good organisational skills. If you lead a family event, you will need to be confident in speaking to, or running activities for, children. Able to represent Butterfly Conservation and its values. Some butterfly and/or moth identification skills can be useful but are not essential as training can be provided in this area. Some events may involve walking over rough terrain, standing for long periods or lifting and carrying equipment. If any of these elements will be a challenge for you, please speak to your supervisor about the many ways you can still participate in the event. Meet new people and discover new places. Disclaimer This role may be active year round, but the main events season is usually March to October. Public events usually take place at the weekend but field trips and walks often also take place in the week or during school holidays. You can choose which events you offer to lead. We ask for a minimum commitment to assist with the set up of one event per year (training) and to lead one event a year. Events can range from 2 hours to a full day. We will also ask you to complete training for the role. A DBS check is required for volunteers working regularly with children. May involve accessing steep slopes, uneven ground, or remote sites.
