Speech Language Pathologist

Speech Language Pathologist Primary Purpose: Plan and provide speech-language pathology services to students with speech, voice, or language disorders. Assess students and provide therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with their students’ ability to derive full benefit from the educational program. Qualifications Education/Certification: Master’s degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university; or Bachelor’s degree and valid Texas Education Agency speech therapy certificate. License: Valid license as a speech-language pathologist granted by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to use accepted tests and measurements to assess communication disorders and conditions. Knowledge of evaluation, habilitation, and rehabilitation of speech-language disorders and conditions. Ability to instruct and manage student behavior. Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Experience: One year supervised clinical speech-language pathology experience. Major Responsibilities and Duties Therapy Conduct independent evaluations to assess students with speech or language disorders and conditions and provide appropriate individual and group therapy consistent with speech and language goals in Individual Education Plans (IEP). Evaluate student progress and determine therapy services. Develop clinical management strategies or procedures and diagnostic statements. Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee. Assist in interpreting assessment data, placement, and goal setting for students with communication disorders according to district procedures. Consultation Consult with colleagues, students, and parents regarding therapy goals, student needs, and involvement in remedial processes. Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement activities that improve communication skills. Provide professional development to school personnel on working effectively with students who have communication deficits. Student Management Create a conducive learning environment appropriate for students’ maturity levels and interests. Establish control and administer discipline per the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook. Program Management Develop and coordinate ongoing evaluation of speech-language pathology services and adjust practices based on findings. Participate in selection of equipment and instructional materials. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports and records. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, and board policy; and adhere to district and campus regulations. May supervise licensed speech-language pathology assistants or aides.* Other Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Supervisory Responsibilities May direct and monitor the work of speech-language pathology assistants or aides.* Mental and Physical Demands Tools/Equipment Used: Standard testing equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals. Posture: Frequent sitting, kneeling, squatting, bending, pushing, pulling, and twisting. Motion: Frequent walking, grasping, and wrist flexion/extension. Lifting: Regular light lifting up to 15 pounds; occasional heavier lifting up to 45 pounds with students who have physical disabilities; physical restraint of non-ambulatory students. Environment: Exposure to biological hazards and potential districtwide travel. Mental demands include frequent interruptions and maintaining emotional control under pressure.
