Retail Pharmacist – PRN

Hopedale Medical Complex is seeking a knowledgeable and patient-focused PRN Retail Pharmacist to join our Retail Pharmacy team. In this role, you'll provide exceptional pharmaceutical care by accurately dispensing medications, counseling patients, collaborating with healthcare providers, and ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations.

Schedule

  • PRN (As Needed)
  • Must be available to work 1–2 days per week , with additional availability to cover vacation, illness, and other planned or unplanned absences of full-time pharmacists.
  • Pharmacy hours include Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Position Summary

The Retail Pharmacist is responsible for the safe and accurate dispensing of prescription and over-the-counter medications while providing exceptional pharmaceutical care and medication counseling. This position reviews and verifies prescriptions, oversees pharmacy operations, supervises pharmacy technicians, ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, and collaborates with providers to optimize patient outcomes.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Review, interpret, verify, and accurately dispense prescription medications.
  • Evaluate prescriptions for accuracy, appropriate dosing, drug interactions, allergies, and therapeutic appropriateness.
  • Counsel patients on medication use, side effects, interactions, storage, and adherence.
  • Answer patient questions and provide recommendations for over-the-counter medications and minor illnesses.
  • Supervise pharmacy technicians and support staff to ensure safe and efficient pharmacy operations.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize medication therapy and patient outcomes.
  • Ensure medications are accurately labeled, packaged, and dispensed according to state and federal regulations.
  • Maintain complete and accurate patient medication records.
  • Monitor patient response to drug therapy and identify potential medication-related concerns.
  • Oversee medication ordering, receiving, storage, and inventory management.
  • Conduct routine inventory reviews and controlled substance audits.
  • Maintain compliance with Illinois pharmacy law, DEA regulations, HIPAA, and other regulatory standards.
  • Assist with quality improvement initiatives and pharmacy process enhancements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe pharmacy environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree or equivalent from an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Current Illinois Pharmacist license or eligibility for Illinois licensure required.
  • Previous retail pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy management systems (RX30, CPSI, or similar) preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacology, dosage calculations, medication safety, and pharmacy law.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and third-party insurance processes.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with healthcare professionals.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and compassion.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

  • Constantly (67–100% of the time): Standing, walking, talking, hearing, near visual acuity, and use of hands and fingers for prescription verification, computer work, medication preparation, and dispensing.
  • Frequently (34–66% of the time): Reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, repetitive hand and wrist movements, and handling medication inventory.
  • Occasionally (11–33% of the time): Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Rarely (Less than 10% of the time): Climbing ladders or working at heights.

Additional physical requirements include:

  • Ability to perform detailed work requiring close visual attention, including reading prescriptions, medication labels, and computer screens.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, providers, pharmacy staff, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to remain on your feet for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Ability to safely operate pharmacy equipment and technology.
