The Carpenter performs journey-level rough and finish carpentry work to support construction, remodeling, and maintenance projects across a community college campus. Responsibilities include installing and repairing drywall, wood and metal stud framing, and suspended ceilings; removing and relocating walls, doors, windows, and mirrors; and completing tenant improvement work and space reconfigurations. The role also involves millwork and cabinet construction and repair, maintenance of doors and hardware, repair of hard surfaces and delaminating countertops, and minor flooring tasks such as carpet and cove base repair and installation. The Carpenter interprets blueprints to identify design or layout issues, prepares cost estimates, and procures materials, while maintaining accurate records, ensuring tools and work areas are clean and safe, and adhering to established policies and procedures, along with performing other related duties as assigned. Essential Functions
35% Performs journey-level rough and finished carpentry work on wood and other materials. Performs mill and cabinet work involving construction, finishing, and repair of structures, fixtures, furniture, cabinets, and equipment 25% Metal framing / Tenant Improvement work. Performs remodeling or new construction of assigned areas, such as rearranging or removal of walls and doorways, and repair and/or installation of drywall and suspended ceilings. Installs and repairs shelving, or paneling 20% Reads, interprets, and checks blueprints on new construction and remodeling to identify possible design and utility layout problems; prepares cost estimates and purchases or initiates purchase of construction materials and/or tools 15% Organizes and maintains work records and related documentation according to established procedures. Maintains tools, machinery and shop in clean and safe working condition. Performs general maintenance and clean-up work as required. Adheres to applicable policies and procedures 5% Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED and four (4) years of carpentry work experience equivalent to a journey-level. OR An Associate's degree or certification from a regionally accredited institution in construction technology, or a related discipline, and two (2) years of carpentry work experience equivalent to a journey-level.
OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
There is no substitution or equivalency allowable for the High School Diploma orGED. Desired Qualifications
A. Two (2) years of experience in Drywall repair B. Two (2) years of experience with flooring and cove base boards C. Two (2) years of experience in Tenant Improvements D. Working Conditions: Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments with frequent exposure to a variety of weather conditions, for short or long durations, including rain, wind, dust, cold temperatures, and extreme desert heat. Work may include moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, fumes, fuels, odors, poor ventilation, gases, blood, or other body fluids). Some indoor work environments may not be air-conditioned. Work may involve frequent exposure to loud noise associated with tools or carpentry work and require the use of hand and power tools. Work may require the use of ladders, scaffolding, or similar equipment, working at heights with safety harnesses or other safety measures. Some work may be performed in an office/computer workstation and require the use of a computer and keyboard for training, to check emails, and/or communicate with coworkers and supervisors.
