This 162-bed acute care facility includes a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a county-designated trauma center. San Luis Obispo offers the excitement of a lively community while being a fifteen-minute drive from the serenity of nearby beaches. The area features a charming downtown, comfortable coastal weather, idyllic views, and an active lifestyle. Job Summary: Provides nursing care, including triage, treatment, and discharge care for Emergency Department patients, from newborns to geriatrics. This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit. Essential Functions: Completes accurate triage assessments on all patients and alerts the Emergency MD of all abnormal signs, symptoms, and vital signs. Reviews and completes patient orders in a timely manner. Provides medication side effects teaching to all patients who receive medication in the ED and includes this teaching in discharge instructions. Recognizes the symptoms of cardiac or respiratory distress and other emergencies. Provides appropriate nursing interventions in stable and emergent patient situations. Demonstrates competence in all routine nursing skills, including medication administration and intravenous therapy. Understands and follows the chain of command as per policy. Accurately interprets ECG rhythms and manages care during life-threatening emergencies. Demonstrates knowledge of lead functions and makes recommendations for best monitoring based on patient presentation. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and skill in providing care during emergency codes. Completes legible, accurate, and timely documentation of all nursing care provided. Performs necessary unit-specific safety and quality control checks. Facilitates safe and timely coordination and collaboration with inpatient units when admitting patients from the ED.
