IACUC Compliance Coordinator

The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of IACUC Compliance Coordinator. Principal Investigators in the UT Knoxville area who utilize animals for teaching and research must submit animal use protocols and amendments for review by the IACUC committee in accordance with federal mandates, state and local laws, and UT policies and procedures. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure animal-based research and teaching is conducted in full compliance with all applicable regulations.

This position will be responsible for oversight of Knoxville-area animal care and use protocols, conducting regular reviews of approved animal use activity in the lab animal facilities, classrooms, laboratories and the field. Guidance and/or recommendations for corrective action are provided to the investigators, as needed. This individual will work with the other compliance staff to coordinate efforts to provide oversight of animal use activities, assist with education of research and teaching personnel, and assist with investigations of compliance-related concerns.

Responsibilities

Conducts routine audits of teaching and research activities involving animal use and ensures investigator compliance with IACUC-approved protocols, federal regulations and policies.

Debriefs investigators regarding audit results. Provides ongoing guidance regarding protocol updates and identified deficiencies.

Documents audit findings, prepares audit reports. Presents results and suggests corrective/preventative action plans to the IACUC Director, IACUC committee and Institutional Official (IO) as appropriate.

Addresses animal welfare concerns. Provides recommendations for development of new or revision of current policies.

Provides support and technical expertise for investigators in the development of protocols and amendments to existing protocols.

Participates in pre-study meetings with PI staff, animal facility staff and OLAC veterinarians.

Attends monthly IACUC meetings and summarizes results of post-approval monitoring sessions, adverse events and compliance concerns.

Participates in semi-annual facility inspections and semi-annual programmatic review.

Attends training, conferences, and other meetings as required.

Serves as alternate member of the IACUC.

Assists with the development and implementation of new training programs.

Assists with maintenance of IACUC SharePoint and WordPress websites.

Performs other tasks at the request of the IACUC Director or senior compliance staff.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Education: Associate's degree in Animal Science, Life Science, or related field

Experience: Minimum of one year experience working with animals in a research or teaching environment. Familiarity with IACUC function. Must have knowledge of animal welfare laws and regulations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: The foundation for this position is extensive knowledge of federal, state and local regulations for the use of vertebrate animals in research, teaching, and testing. The position requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to provide effective, constructive feedback to investigators. The ability to recognize and implement corrective actions to solve problems is essential. Candidate must have the ability to read and interpret animal health data and records. Effective written and oral communication skills are required. Excellent computer software (Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe) skills are are required. Effective training skills are essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Animal Science, Life Science, or related field

Experience: At least one year of experience as a veterinary technician preferred. Surgical experience preferred. Experience with laboratory animals is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of website design (SharePoint, WordPress) is preferred.
