Position: Director of Operations – Building Enclosure Consulting

Location: Myrtle Beach, SC

Salary: $140,000–$165,000 annually + Performance-Based Bonus

Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Overview

A leading national engineering and building science consulting firm is seeking an experienced Director of Operations – Building Enclosure Consulting to oversee operational performance, technical consulting, and team development across multiple offices. This leadership position offers a unique combination of strategic management and hands-on technical consulting. Approximately 50% of the role will focus on billable project work, including building investigations, condition assessments, technical reviews, field observations, and client consulting. The remaining time will be dedicated to operational leadership, business planning, team development, and organizational growth.

The ideal candidate is an experienced engineering, architecture, or building science professional with strong business acumen, technical expertise, and a proven ability to lead teams, improve operational performance, and build lasting client relationships.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Consulting & Project Delivery

• Perform building science consulting services, including building investigations, condition assessments, field observations, testing oversight, and technical evaluations.
• Lead and support complex building enclosure, restoration, rehabilitation, forensic investigation, and existing building projects.
• Serve as a trusted technical advisor to building owners, architects, contractors, attorneys, property managers, and project teams.
• Review technical reports, repair recommendations, construction documents, and project deliverables to ensure quality and accuracy.
• Participate in site visits, client meetings, and construction observations while maintaining individual billable utilization goals.

Operational Leadership & Performance

• Oversee operational performance across multiple offices, including staffing, utilization, backlog, forecasting, invoicing, accounts receivable, profitability, and project execution.
• Optimize resource planning and workload distribution across teams and geographic regions.
• Monitor key operational and financial metrics to identify opportunities for improved efficiency and performance.
• Implement standardized processes, technology, and operational best practices to improve consistency and productivity.
• Ensure projects are delivered safely, profitably, on schedule, and in accordance with quality standards.

Team Development & Leadership

• Lead, mentor, and develop consultants, project managers, and senior technical professionals.
• Foster a collaborative, accountable, and results-driven team environment.
• Provide coaching, technical guidance, and professional development opportunities.
• Identify emerging leaders and support succession planning initiatives.
• Encourage collaboration and resource sharing across offices and service lines.

Technical Excellence & Quality Management

• Establish and maintain consistent technical standards across the organization.
• Support the development and implementation of standardized specifications, technical details, quality control procedures, and project delivery tools.
• Promote technical knowledge sharing and professional development across teams.
• Encourage innovation in building science, enclosure consulting, restoration, rehabilitation, and forensic investigations.
• Ensure technical deliverables meet industry standards and client expectations.

Business Development & Strategic Growth

• Partner with business development and executive leadership teams to identify growth opportunities and expand client relationships.
• Support strategic pursuits, proposal development, and new business initiatives.
• Develop and execute annual business plans addressing revenue, profitability, utilization, backlog, staffing, and growth objectives.
• Analyze financial and operational performance to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Support organizational growth initiatives, including potential mergers, acquisitions, and expansion into new markets.
• Represent the building science practice in cross-functional leadership and strategic planning activities.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
• 8+ years of professional experience in engineering, architecture, construction management, building science, restoration, rehabilitation, forensic consulting, or a related field.
• 2+ years of leadership experience involving staff management, business operations, financial performance, strategic planning, or business development.
• Strong understanding of building science principles, building enclosure systems, structural systems, and the design and construction process.
• Demonstrated experience managing complex consulting projects and maintaining strong client relationships.
• Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop technical professionals.
• Strong financial and operational management skills, including experience with utilization

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA) license.
• Experience managing operations across multiple offices or geographic markets.
• Background in building enclosure consulting, forensic investigations, restoration, or rehabilitation.
• Experience supporting business growth, strategic planning, and operational improvements within an engineering or architectural consulting organization.
