Job Summary Advance Energy Geoscience Research to Support Kentucky’s Subsurface Resource Future The University of Kentucky is seeking a Geologist III to join the Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS). This position will contribute to KGS’s subsurface and energy geology research program through the investigation of energy resources, basin analysis, geophysics, and related geoscience disciplines. The successful candidate will develop research projects, publish findings, engage with stakeholders, manage projects and personnel, and help advance KGS’s mission of supporting informed decisions about Kentucky’s subsurface resources. What You’ll Do Perform independent geologic research focused on subsurface energy resources, basin analysis, geophysics, petrophysics, stratigraphy, structural geology, and related topics. Compile, analyze, and interpret geological, geophysical, and petrophysical datasets to create maps, cross sections, and regional subsurface characterizations. Conduct field investigations, collect geological samples, and apply established data collection and safety standards. Publish research results in peer-reviewed outlets and present findings at professional conferences and meetings. Manage research projects, including project planning, budgeting, reporting, database maintenance, and coordination with collaborators and sponsors. Develop new research opportunities through stakeholder engagement, networking, proposal development, and pursuit of external funding. Supervise research staff, assign work, monitor progress, and provide mentoring and professional development support. Collaborate with KGS colleagues, external partners, state agencies, landowners, and stakeholders to support successful project outcomes and public engagement efforts. What You’ll Bring Strong technical expertise in one or more areas such as petrophysics, stratigraphy, structural geology, geophysics, geofluids, or subsurface energy resources. Experience interpreting complex geological and geophysical datasets using industry-standard software tools. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including scientific publication and presentation experience. Ability to manage multiple projects, maintain organized datasets, and oversee project deliverables. Strong attention to detail, sound professional judgment, and analytical problem-solving skills. Collaborative approach to teamwork, mentoring, stakeholder engagement, and relationship building. Knowledge of Kentucky geology is beneficial.
