Job Preview

The Registered Nurse OR Circulator provides professional nursing care to patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. The OR Circulator works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia personnel, surgical technologists, nurses, and other members of the surgical team to promote patient safety, maintain a safe and efficient operating room environment, and ensure that surgical procedures are performed according to established standards and policies. The OR Circulator serves as an advocate for the patient throughout the surgical experience and is responsible for coordinating patient care, documenting intraoperative activities, maintaining accurate counts and records, anticipating the needs of the surgical team, and responding appropriately to changes in the patient's condition.

Hopedale Medical Complex has a robust Surgery Department , providing an excellent opportunity for an experienced OR nurse or an RN interested in developing their surgical nursing skills.

Schedule: MondayFriday, day shift, beginning at 6:00 a.m. , with a rotating call schedule.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Preoperative Patient Care

• Serve as a patient advocate before, during, and after surgical procedures.
• Assess and monitor the patient's condition and vital signs before surgery and throughout the perioperative period.
• Verify patient identity, procedure, surgical site, consent, and other required documentation in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Assist with positioning and preparation of the patient for surgery while maintaining safety, dignity, privacy, and comfort.
• Identify and communicate patient concerns, changes in condition, allergies, or other pertinent information to the appropriate members of the surgical team.
• Provide individualized nursing care based on the patient's condition, procedure, and specific needs.

Intraoperative Patient Care

• Coordinate and oversee nursing activities within the operating room during surgical procedures.
• Maintain continuous awareness of the patient's condition and advocate for patient safety throughout the procedure.
• Assist with positioning, skin preparation, equipment placement, and other patient preparation activities as appropriate.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and ensure required instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications are available.
• Monitor the operating room environment and take appropriate action to maintain patient safety and infection prevention standards.
• Assist surgeons and other members of the surgical team as necessary and within the scope of nursing practice.
• Recognize potential risks to the patient and communicate concerns promptly to the surgical team.
• Monitor and document patient care, vital signs, medications, specimens, surgical activities, and other required information accurately.
• Maintain awareness of medications, including anesthetic and analgesic agents, and their effects on the patient.
• Participate in surgical time-outs, counts, specimen verification, and other required patient-safety processes.
• Perform and document surgical counts in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Documentation and Communication

• Accurately document events and activities associated with each surgical procedure.
• Document the names and roles of surgical team members, instruments and supplies used, medications administered, specimens obtained, and other required procedural information.
• Communicate patient information, changes in condition, safety concerns, and other pertinent information to physicians, anesthesia personnel, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.
• Maintain accurate and complete medical records in accordance with HMC policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and applicable privacy requirements.

Postoperative Care

• Assist with transferring and transporting patients following surgical procedures.
• Safely transfer patients to the appropriate recovery area and provide a complete report to receiving personnel.
• Ensure the patient's condition, care provided, medications, and other pertinent information are communicated during transfer of care.
• Assist with postoperative room turnover and preparation of the operating room for subsequent procedures.
• Ensure instruments, equipment, and supplies are accounted for and appropriately handled following each procedure.

Equipment, Supplies, and Safety

• Prepare, check, and maintain surgical equipment, instruments, supplies, and materials required for scheduled procedures.
• Ensure appropriate supplies and equipment are available and functioning properly.
• Identify equipment or supply concerns and report them to the appropriate personnel.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized operating room environment.
• Follow established infection prevention, sterile technique, safety, and surgical procedures.
• Participate in quality improvement activities, competency assessments, continuing education, and required training.
• Remain current with changes in surgical procedures, equipment, technology, and standards of practice.
• Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required.
• Current, unrestricted Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
• Current BLS certification required.
• Current ACLS certification required.
• Strong critical-thinking, organizational, and decision-making skills.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations.
• Ability to work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, surgical technicians, anesthesia providers, and ancillary staff.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
• Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced surgical environment.
• Ability to modify nursing interventions based on the individual patient's condition and needs.
• Knowledge of physiology, pathophysiology, geriatrics, and critical care.
• Knowledge of anesthesia and analgesia pharmacology.
• Ability to independently recognize patient needs and initiate appropriate nursing interventions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous operating room or perioperative nursing experience strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of ambulatory surgery and operative procedures preferred.
• AORN, ASPAN, AACN, or other professional organization membership preferred.

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed in the hospital's operating room and perioperative areas. The position involves frequent interaction with patients, physicians, nurses, surgical technicians, anesthesia providers, and other healthcare professionals.

The employee may be exposed to blood, bodily fluids, infectious materials, medications, cleaning agents, surgical equipment, and other healthcare-related hazards. Appropriate personal protective equipment and safety procedures must be followed at all times.
